The Hero's Walk
The Hero's Walk | Anita Rau Badami
After the release of Anita Rau Badami's critically acclaimed first novel, Tamarind Mem, it was evident a promising new talent had joined the Canadian literary community. Her dazzling literary follow-up is The Hero's Walk, a novel teeming with the author's trademark tumble of the haphazard beauty, wreckage and folly of ordinary lives. Set in the dusty seaside town of Toturpuram on the Bay of Bengal, The Hero's Walk traces the terrain of family and forgiveness through the lives of an exuberant cast of characters bewildered by the rapid pace of change in today's India. Each member of the Rao family pits his or her chance at personal fulfillment against the conventions of a crumbling caste and class system.Anita Rau Badami explains that "The Hero's Walk is a novel about so many things: loss, disappointment, choices and the importance of coming to terms with yourself and the circumstances of your life without losing the dignity embedded in all of us. At one level it is about heroism - not the hero of the classic epic, those enormous god-sized heroes - but my fascination with the day-to-day heroes and the heroism that's needed to survive all the unexpected disasters and pitfalls of life."From the Hardcover edition.

My 3 -year #24HRR journey comes to an end. I opted for audio, rather than the print book sent to me. I would have bailed on the print, but the audio narrator, Laara Sadiq, was fantastic. Literary fiction rarely works for me-I find the everyday disappointments of life oppressive. But, the writing here is often lovely and definitely evocative, so if you like this genre, definitely give this one a shot.

LeahBergen I liked this one. 👍🏻 5y
DGRachel @LeahBergen I really, really hated the grandmother. 😡 I felt bad for just about everyone else, but Ammayya was horrid. 5y

1. I took a picture of a leaf after my run today. It did not come out the way I was hoping, so it‘s mostly just grass.
2. Just one (The Mermaid & Mrs Hancock)
3. Yes, it‘s been a little chilly. The fiancé & I are trying to figure out how hot to keep it (I like it cooler).
4. Yep, I‘d run into walls without them.
5. The MC was a chauvinist male. I couldn‘t deal with that & the Kavanaugh BS at the same time. It was just too much.

A quiet and beautifully told story about the intricacies of family relationships and the heroism in the characters in fighting their own battles. Started off slow for me, but it gets better as the story unfolds. I liked the descriptive writing and how the characters evolve throughout the story. An interesting read but it‘s also sad. I‘m glad to have read it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

This novel follows Sripathi Rao, whose family has been struck by tragedy. In the wake of a fatal accident, Sripathi and his family are faced with the consequences of how they‘ve lived for decades, and each individual has to choose what path they will follow. The writing was beautiful and lyrical, and really captured the inner voice of Sripathi. #PassportLitsy #India

I found this book difficult to read, but it was very good. I think books that make us question things and feel uncomfortable are good for us. This book did that for me.

//⭐️⭐️⭐️// There is hope felt in this book, but there is also sadness. It is the sadness of cultural restraints that people allow themselves to be pigeon holed into — one way of thinking and being. This is not unique to one culture; all cultures experience this in their own ways. However, even with this sadness, I found The Hero's Walk interesting, as characters grew and adapted during a difficult time in life. I enjoyed this story.

A bittersweet look into life, death, love, regrets, survival, & family. I ❤️ this book & it should have won 🍁Canada reads. It is not a light read, but the characters are flawed & very realistic that you can't help yourself from being sucked in to this book.

Apart from the initial upset, the events of The Hero's Walk are mostly quiet and subtle, though the environs are lively and colourful. The tension comes from the interactions of a cast of idiosyncratic and richly drawn characters. Full review: http://goo.gl/N2lf07
