I love nonfiction for kids, and this was a great story, winning both the Sibert Medal for best nonfiction and a Newbery Honor for writing.
On Easter Sunday, 1939, Marian Anderson sang for a crowd of 75,000 people gathered at the Lincoln Memorial with her in protest. Even though she was recognized as one of the greatest singers in the world she was banned from singing at Constitution Hall because she was black.
