Thru-Hiking Will Break Your Heart
Thru-Hiking Will Break Your Heart: An Adventure on the Pacific Crest Trail | Carrot Quinn
15 posts | 7 read | 1 reading | 18 to read
Carrot Quinn fears that she's become addicted to the internet. The city makes her feel numb, and she's having trouble connecting with others. In a desperate move she breaks away from everything to walk 2,660 miles from Mexico to Canada on the Pacific Crest Trail. It will be her first long-distance hike.
In the desert of Southern California Carrot faces many challenges, both physical and emotional: pain, injury, blisters, aching cold and searing heat, dehydration, exhaustion, loneliness. In the wilderness she happens upon and becomes close with an eclectic group of strangers- people she wouldn't have chanced to meet in the regular world but who are brought together, here on the trail, by their one common goal: make it to Canada before the snow flies.

Mehso-so

Since I have neither hiked the PCT nor written a book, I am giving this a so-so only because I wanted it to be something else (um, if I‘m being honest, I wanted it to be a little bit WILD and a little bit A WALK IN THE WOODS) and not because it‘s bad. Bonus points for it being my sleep story more than a few times, with takeaway points for me not caring that I fell asleep and missed parts. To me, it was less “adventure” and more “hike diary” - meh.

Probably an unpopular post. But this is what a cop has to do sometimes while listening to her audiobooks 👍🏻. Inspections are tomorrow so every piece of equipment has to be clean and accounted for.

mnjacques I'm a deputy for thr city i live in. I completely understand! 5y
Copwithabook @mngraham hey, it‘s so awesome to meet other cops on here! Do you get to listen to audiobooks while driving? We have 12 hour shifts so they were essential for me. 5y
mnjacques @Copwithabook I do not. We have 12 hour shifts too but I'm currently working in the jail 5y

This book was on sale on Audible last month so I picked it up to get me excited about my own backpacking trip with my son and some friends. This book is enjoyable, and though super sore, we had a great hiking trip!

Nute Great photo of you and your son, Ms. Rachel. You look like a pair of hiking Rockstars!🥾💕 5y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Great photo ❤️ 5y
Copwithabook Thank you @Nute and @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks this was his first backpacking trip and he certainly felt like a rockstar (all puns intended) 5y

Just saw this on Instagram—Carrot Quinn has her book posted for free today and tomorrow. Visit instagram.com/carrotquinn for link. #selfpublished

It‘s a day-by-day record of her 2013 PCT hike. To me it felt like a magical realism nature journal and totally accurate to the feel of the PCT.

BookDragonNotWorm Ooh, thanks for sharing this!!! 🥾🏞️ 5y

One of the best books I‘ve read in a long long time. I‘m gonna read it again in October and probably cry every few pages.

Welp, I didn‘t make my goal but I read twice as many books as I did last year so I still consider it a win.

To my credit, when I set my goal I wasn‘t planning on being in school in the fall which is what I ended up doing. I was on track until the semester started. 🤷🏻‍♀️

But still, 153 books! 🙌🏽

Riveted_Reader_Melissa That‘s excellent! 7y
bookloo Still freaking fantastic. 153 is a crazy high number! 😍🎉 7y

I live here, I think. In the nature. I walk on the nature and eat on the nature and sleep on the nature.

I am safe.

hike.read.repeat @BookishMarginalia you‘re very perceptive. 😉 7y
BookishMarginalia Wow! What exactly is a thru-hike? (edited) 7y
hike.read.repeat @BookishMarginalia a really really long backpacking/hiking trip. The three most popular long distance hiking trails in the US are the AT (2100 mi), PCT (2600 mi), and the CDT (3100 mi). Each year thousands of people attempt to hike one of these trails from end to end in one go. That is a thru hike. Did my first thru hike this year of the “shorter” Colorado Trail (500 mi). Going after my long time dream of the PCT in 2018. 🤞🏽 7y
BookishMarginalia That is impressive! 💪🏼 7y
hike.read.repeat @BookishMarginalia thanks. I‘m not a super athlete or anything like that. Most of the people that choose to hike these trails are just regular folks. There is tons of research and prep involved but mostly the trail makes you strong enough to keep going. 7y

When I'm laid up I love to read about people having adventures. Moving from the couch to the backyard is about as adventurous as I'm feeling today but it sure feels great to sit in the sunshine for a little while.

I really liked this book! It's a personal account of Carrot's thru-hike of the PCT, which runs from Mexico to Canada on the west coast. Carrot's writing is informal, personal, authentic, and it feels like she's sitting with you telling you stories about her adventure. I'm into hiking, so I love reading about big thru-hikes like this. It's easy to read and really fun to hear about being on the trail. It makes me want to get out there!
