Pickpick

I finished this delightful book this morning. It's a beautifully written, funny tale of Sampath, who decides to escape his life by living in a tree. He is soon befriended by a mischievous band of monkeys. Hilarity ensues. Desai deftly weaves a story about absurdity, spirituality, and cultural expectations.
This was my June #doublespin pick from my list of #essentialwomenwriters.

#bookspin update. I'm finally mostly caught up. I've been plodding through Middlemarch since the middle of March, and Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard is up next.

TheAromaofBooks Yay!! Looking great!!! Middlemarch is a slog! 7mo

Before his eyes, flitting and darting all about him, was a flock of parrots, a vivid jewel-green, chattering and shrieking in the highest of spirits. This scene filled his whole mind and he wondered if he could ever get enough of it. This was the way of riches and this was a king's life, he thought... and he ached to swallow it whole, in one glorious mouthful...

Why don't you read something that will affect us? For example, the Cinema Monkey. Is there anything about the Cinema Monkey?'
' What monkey?' asked her father, bewildered.
"See, you are completely out of touch with local issues! For the past month he has been creating havoc outside the cinema, harassing ladies, pulling at their saris until they drop their peanut cones.

Let us take a moment to appreciate a truly underappreciated #fruit, the guava. The book itself is fine. An interesting premise of a Bartleby of the orchard, hampered by too-clever writing that's a bit too pleased with itself. The kind of quirky magical realism that I find unbearable because it's just a tad too cute in its absurdity, thus twee. Or maybe it's because I prefer a bleak book to a "funny" one. ? #maybookflowers @RealLifeReading

rockpools I think I agree. I'm usually quite happy with magical realism, and not too keen on bleak, but I found this a little too strange. Pleased with itself sounds about right. 8y
batsy @RachelO Yes, it's not the magical realism itself that I dislike, so much as a certain style that deploys it just to be clever. The tone of this book didn't sit well with me. 8y
