“I didn‘t wish I were still a mere fox, but I wished being a woman were less of a burden.” -Kij Johnson, The Fox Woman

This is slow but stunning. An interesting retelling of a Japanese fairy tale.
An intriguing subtle story told from three perspectives - a gentleman's notebook, the pillow book of his wife, and the diary of a fox who has fallen in love with the man. This is a tale of longing, of strange fox magic, and of life in 10th century Japan.
My enjoyment of this book is occasionally marred by the use of "d" instead of "s" for some words. It's rather odd but it has occurred several times already, somewhat randomly, and I'm about 2/3 of my way through the book!
I've been in a heck of a reading slump for the past few days but this book has reawakened my drive. I love it so far, practically lyrical.
