Jack, the Giant-killer | Charles de Lint

Re-reading this, I was pleased to see that Jack remains an engaging and positive female hero. Written decades ago, when female heroes did not roam plentifully, DeLint led the way.

Toronto has a different side when you can see the Fae. And human eating giants in the park. Jack is dealing with boyfriend issues when she is drawn into a battle between good and evil & those who are neither.

DeLint always delivers a solid adventure!

This is my set of the Terri Windling edited Fairy Tale series. I started collecting these pre-easy-internet searching & realize now there is one more I need. To quench my weird completist nature 😬
This fairytale #retelling series was my introduction to both Patricia Wrede's adult fantasies and master urban fantasist Charles DeLint - starting deep, lifelong love of their work.
Oh, and these Thomas Canty covers. So 1990s, yet so right 😻

aeeklund YESSSSSSSS. So gorgeous!!! I haven't found a copy of Tam Lin yet. 7y
merelybookish I had a copy of Tam Lin a while ago and then got rid of it in a purging. 😔 7y

GypsyKat Well, thanks to this post I now have 8 more books on my TBR list. You had me at fairytale retellings. 👍 7y
aeeklund Also which one are you saying you're missing? 7y
elkeOriginal @GypsyKat You're welcome 😆 7y
elkeOriginal @aeeklund The Nightingale by Kara Dalkey. I just found one online though. I had Fitcher's Brides but got rid of it - I must have hated it 😕 7y
aeeklund There's also Thomas the Rhymer by Ellen Kushner. Have you read that one? 7y
aeeklund I'm also missing The Nightingale. I'll be interested to hear what you think of the Brust book. 7y

JazzFeathers I only havd the Tanith Lee one... but now l want all of them 😭 7y
readinginthedark I've never read these! Is the tagged book the first one? 7y
elkeOriginal @readinginthedark They are not connected - all standalones - just a 'series' in that they all retell fairytales. So you can try whichever one sounds good to you! 7y
readinginthedark @elkeo Oh okay. I never know, because sometimes the descriptions don't sound connected but the same characters will pop-up throughout, and it always adds something if you can recognize characters you read about earlier. 7y
elkeOriginal @readinginthedark I hear ya! These are easy. All their own thing. That is why you can love one and not another - totally different setting & feel. I have not read Briar Rose yet - probably because it's holocaust-y...😬 Tam Lin is 1970s midwest university art students, Snow White is Victorian, Jack Giant Killer is urban Canada, etc! 7y
readinginthedark @elkeo Oh wow, so really different! How interesting! 7y
rubyslippersreads These are lovely! 😍 7y
