The Cry of the Dove
The Cry of the Dove: A Novel | Fadia Faqir
4 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
Exquisitely woven.Leila Aboulela Timely and lyrical, The Cry of the Dove is the story of one young woman and an evocative portrait of forbidden love and violated honor in a culture whose reverberations are felt profoundly in our world today. Salma has committed a crime punishable by death in her Bedouin tribe of Hima, Levant: she had sex out of wedlock and became pregnant. Despite the insult it would commit against her people, Salma has the child and suddenly finds herself a fugitive on the run from those seeking to restore their honor. Salma is rushed into protective custody where her newborn is ripped from her arms, and where she sits alone for years before being ushered to safety in England. Away from her Bedouin village, Salma is an asylum-seeker trying to melt into the crowd, under pressure to reassess her way of life. She learns English customs from her landlady and befriends a Pakistani girl who is also on the run, with whose help Salma finally forges a new identity. But just as things settle, the need to return for her lost daughter overwhelms her, and one fateful day, Salma risks everything to go back and find her.

Even if you want to question the adoption, which is ridiculous in itself, she should be given the right of political, social, or religious asylum - whatever you want to call it. Yes, you would create a precedent, but hundreds, nay thousands of women are killed every year. You must give her shelter because if you send her back she will be shot on sight.

The writing was choppy and the events of the story were all over the place, but it worked. The narrator was a young girl who lived in a prison for a few years before escaping as a refugee for having an out of wedlock baby. You can tell the anguish and pain went into the making of the book. #Jordan #ReadingAsia2021 @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

This was not at all what I thought it would be, and I was pleasantly surprised. The book took me a good while to read though, and it‘s about as uplifting as you‘d think. My third book for #passportlitsy (I don‘t quite understand the cover art though, it doesn‘t feel very fitting...)

Trying to get some reading done before tonight‘s go kart driving with work in Gdańsk. Which I‘m not looking forward to. My suggestion for our activity was a food and vodka city tour, but no... #passportlitsy
