A captivatingly gloomy read. Burnet has compiled a delightfully twisting maze of fictionalised found documents relating to a grisly murder case in the 19th century Scottish Highlands; and despite its endlessly grim tone (the soul-sucking tone fits the inescapably morose atmosphere that permeates the lives of the book's characters), I had a surprising amount of fun reading it.

Been a bit quiet as I've been working through the shortlist following this big news! Last year's winner was One by Sarah Crossan and this year will be such a toss up between so many wonderful books 😍😍😍😍
Been looking forward to this for ages. It's almost too pretty to read but lucky me, I've got a kindle version and this one's on loan for -aesthetic- purposes.
Really enjoyed this even though my usual policy is to avoid speculative Hitler-won-the-war fiction (the world has enough Nazis as it is right?), but even though it wasn't a genre I'd typically choose, even though the premise raised my eyebrows a little (Hitler wins + shape shifting + cross country motorcycle racing), I loved every second of it. Ryan Graudin has a killer gift for atmosphere and suspense, and her writing really made the book for me.
I've had this proof copy for the most embarrassingly long time before starting but I can't wait to dive in as the SEQUEL is out soon 😆
It didn't win the Man Booker for nothing right? The Sellout strives to make the reader exceedingly uncomfortable, outraged, and tickled at the same time... and reader, I was all of those things PLUS in love with Beatty's way of bringing his grandiose, conceptual satire down to earth with subtle, human observations - "The soft light-blue of a pool lit up at night is my favourite colour." ? It can be a daunting read but it's also a worthy one.
Can always trust a Man Booker winner to be a good travel companion ❤️
So far The Sellout is painfully funny and holds no punches.
