On the Come Up | Angie Thomas

Pickpick

In the second half of this book, Bri deals with the consequences of fame and repairing her relationship with her mother. I have finished the book, I can say the second half is better than the first. The way Thomas wrote Bri struggling to find herself and figure out what she really wants to do was really connecting and relatable. The theme was diving deep to find yourself, written in the first person. If you liked Dear Martin, you'll like this.

MissYaremcio Well done Kalkidan! I would have loved a bit more of an explanation as to how we know the POV, but overall great work! 5/6 4y

On the Come Up is centered around Bri (an up-and-coming rapper) in Garden Heights. Her song is a hit, but reaches conflict because it was released. Although I didn't finish it, On the Come Up was a great book. I got about halfway, but I could tell the theme was about defeating the odds and fighting for what's yours. It's present in the story as she becomes successful, even without the means. If you liked The Hate U Give, you'll like this one.

MissYaremcio Well done Kalkidan! Keep up the great work! I am glad that you enjoyed this book and it makes me happy to hear that it is a continuation of great writing! Added to my 'to-read' list! 6/6 4y
