The Nickel Boys: A Novel | Colson Whitehead
Pickpick

This is a haunting novel that will stay with me for a long time. While it is fiction, it is based on the true life events that took place at the Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys, a segregated reform school in Florida that opened in 1900 and was finally shut down in 2011. To say that the events that happened in the story are unjust and unfair is a huge understatement. Excellent read!

The Reckoning: A Novel | John Grisham
Pickpick

As an avid fan of John Grisham, I was anxiously waiting for his latest book and am thrilled to say I was not disappointed! This is an intriguing thriller from the opening chapter and it totally sucks you in. There‘s a section where he expands on the main character‘s service in the military that goes on for a little bit longer than I would have liked. That is probably the only complaint I have about the book. The twist at the end - wow!

MonicaLoves2Read Loved this book. Like you, that twist at the end was something else!🤔 6y
jz4usc I certainly did not see it coming! I think Mr. Grisham did a great job on this one... 6y

Let me just say that if you are an avid reader like I am, you HAVE to do yourself a favor and read “Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine.” This is definitely one of the best books I‘ve read in a long time and is one of my favorites. It has so many emotions, including great humor and some hard to handle issues, but it is told so well. The the twist - holy cow -is a good one and left me with my mouth hanging wide open. A fantastic read!

CoffeeNBooks This has been on my TBR stack for way too long- I need to read it soon! 6y
jz4usc It was on mine for a long time as well when my librarian told me I needed to read it so I just did it and am so glad I did it! The main character is now one of my favorites! She is an odd bird needless to say but is hysterical with her comments and dry humor but then things change...and I will just leave it at that so as to not give anything away! 6y

I have not read anything by Stephen King in a long time but am so glad I chose this one! It is a definite page turner and I could hardly get through it fast enough. I would get so aggravated when stuff pulled me away from it and that to me is a sign of a great book. I loved the entire thing and the way it ended. Good story and creepy fun!

Wow! What a stunner of a book! I am not really sure how to describe it as it just kept me so engaged from the get go and I could not believe what I was reading. It it such an intense thriller and I kept wanting to scream at certain characters in the book to run! The writing was excellent and was well paced and suspense non-stop. This was a great read and highly recommend.

Very interesting and intriguing read! The storyline is definitely one of the most original I have read in a long time. There were a few moments where I lost interest but then the story and suspense picked back up again and I could not wait to see what was going to happen.

I loved this book...I am still not 100% sure about the ending but the storyline and writing itself was excellent!

Such a sad but, in many ways, true quote... “Parents, she thought, learned to survive touching their children less and less.”

Sitting here shell shocked after reading this excellent novel! Part of me is angry, upset, relieved, sad, sickened, astonished...those are just a few of the words I know to describe the emotions experienced while reading this book. Don‘t know what to say because some of the things said, and not just actions, that took place in this novel made me mad yet they also made me look into some of my emotions and feelings about being a person and parent.

KathyWheeler That book is something else! 7y

Love this quote...

“I can‘t think of anything lonelier than spending the rest of my life with someone I can‘t talk to, or worse, someone I can‘t be silent with.” So true indeed...

Excellent suspense novel about a CIA analyst and her journey through dealing with Russian spies and trying to determine whether or not she should trust her husband while keeping her family safe! John Grisham has given raves about this one and I can see why!

“Overarousal is hard. There‘s just no getting around it. ...Still, living life aware of death makes sense to me, provided it increases your appreciation of the moment. When the awareness is too intense, you can always enjoy that handy universal defense called denial. And let your friends or family gather around you to help. They have faced or will confront these questions someday, too.”

jz4usc @jz4usc Pretty good book that pointed out some things that were me on the spot! (edited) 7y

Absolutely enthralling and fantastic read. This was one I could not put down! It was totally engrossing and the characters so life like that it was almost scary. Actually, it is scary because I am sure that there are people who have the same characteristics as all the people in this book.

I cannot wait to see what this author comes up with next.

Excellent, well written book about the works of one man who has and is trying to help others unjustly accused of wrong doings and sentenced to prison and the death penalty. I was stunned by the statistics provided in the book about the number of youth and women who were convicted and abused by a crooked legal system. Incredible stories of people in this book and how one man was able to get justice but in the end his life was changed forever.

Love this quote from this book...

“He remains for my family the perfect model of how you can be gone but ever present in the lives of people who loved you, in the same way that your favorite books stay with you for your entire life, no matter how long it‘s been since you turned the last page.”
