Many books later, I was giving a talk in Texas and a woman raised her hand and said that her minister had told the congregation that they should never read novels with omniscient narrators because the writer was trying to imitate God. "Really?" I said. "No Tolstoy? No Dickens?"

Dogs are wonderful, and in many ways unique. But they are remarkably unremarkable in their intellectual and experiential capacities. Pigs are every bit as intelligent and feeling, by any sensible definition of the words. They can't hop into the back of a Volvo, but they can fetch, run and play, be mischievous, and reciprocate affection. So why don't they get to curl up by the fire? Why can't they at least be spared being tossed on the fire?

Really enjoyed this book based on Russian folklore. Reminded me very much of the books I used to read when I was younger.

"Dreams, memories, the sacred--they are all alike in that they are beyond our grasp. Once we are even marginally separated from what we can touch, the object is sanctified; it acquires the beauty of the unattainable, the quality of the miraculous. Everything, really, has this quality of sacredness, but we can desecrate it at a touch. How strange man is! His touch defiles and yet he contains the source of miracles."

"I'd begun to notice small things: I didn't strike up conversations with strangers as easily or smile at them; I didn't ask for things as readily at restaurants and many of the tables felt too exposed. I was beginning to be afraid again."

Trying to figure out what Litsy is all about. Here's what I'm reading. It's a favorite from my high school years, which means it's been over 10 years since I read it last 😬
