As much as I'm tired of self-hating male YA protagonists, this makes it work by incorporating mental health issues alongside all types of diversity. Lives up to the selling point of what life is like as a group of normal kids living in a fantasy novel world. Listened on audio from the library.

Never thought I'd enjoy a part-memoir, part-falconry lesson so much, but Helen MacDonald's storytelling and prose is so evocative.

It's weird, sometimes this reads like the first book of a series (explaining basic world concepts), sometimes it feels like the last (dropping us in with character relationships nearly completely formed/having evolved in the past), but it works.
