I want to have a meal with Lillian. Such an interesting and well-developed character. We should all age so openly and gracefully.

Beautifully evocative writing, fabulous imagery. Nothing bad happens. No one is raped or murdered or abused. It was a pleasure to enjoy a book so thoroughly. Great water metaphors. Totally worth my scarce reading time.
Should have loved it as it's about books, quirky characters and France. Boring. Didn't care about the characters and the quest seemed foolish and unnecessary. Harsh but that's how I felt.
Loved. Loved the writing, the emotion and the palpable teenaged yearning. Then got tired of it after 300 pages. Then loved it again at the end.
My kids were captivated. Me, the racism and minor sexism took some explaining both to my kids and to myself for not recognizing that when I read it 40 years ago. But I did enjoy the feeling of returning to fourth grade when I read every single Nancy Drew mystery. A nostalgic but skippable pick.
Delightful summery escapism, well written, characters I want my kids to emulate.
