I thought The Hazel Wood was best when it was all fairytale and sinister woods. I spent a lot of time being confused and wondering about the rules and the magic. And maybe not a spoiler that all the confusion gets explained and intertwined, but I don‘t know if that‘s enough for me as a reader.

I really love the artwork by S.D. Nelson in Buffalo Bird Girl, and the repeated line, “I learned by watching and then doing,” as Buffalo Bird Girl describes the every day life of the Hidatsa with tenderness and grace.

I loved Xiomara for all her fight. Elizabeth Acevedo poetry slammed this whole audiobook and it was fantastic. Now I need the book book so I can go back through all those verses.

Just started this story about a family caught between the formation of Pakistan and the newly independent India, and their journey as refugees from their home to something new.

I agree with the author‘s note from Laurie Halse Anderson: “The story and (graphic novel) form seemed to be a natural fit, but only in the hands of the right artist. Emily Carroll is that artist.” This was beautifully rendered.
