An ideal story for Veterans Day and the upcoming holidays. The TRUE story of a handful of American soldiers who, during the darkest days of WWII, bring Christmas back to a small war-torn town and unknowingly create a holiday tradition there that honors those soldiers to this very day.
TOM BROKAW: "It will touch your heart and make you proud."
WILLIE GEIST: "An uplifting must read."
I'm not usually into this sort of genre...whatever that is, some sci-fi fantasy reality line-blur but this was an enjoyable read...right up to the end where it was clear the story would continue in the next of what was to be a trilogy series. I didn't know that going in. Had I, I might have steered clear. But, since the first book was a captivating read, I anxiously awaited the second. Unfortunately the wait was not rewarded.
This was a case of the movie actually being better than the book. While the premise was set nicely, drawing the reader into its orbit, passages drier than a Martian desert made it a less than stellar read.
An excellent and absorbing read, this book delights and intrigues with its spy themed narrative. Don't get too comfortable as the ending will assault you.
As usual Alan Furst weaves incredible detail into his storyline never letting the detail derail the pace. Although this review is about this specific work it is indicative of his others as well. Aside from the detailed insight, Furst's story telling is at its best here. Engrossing and absorbing I recommend this to anyone who hasn't read a Furst novel.
Another in the "killing of..." books by O'Reilly that although well researched regurgitates known facts and threads them together tenuously to support the book's title and premise.
How it all began...
Don't let Veterans Day or the holidays pass without reading this incredible and TRUE story.
TOM BROKAW: "It will touch your heart and make you proud."
