It‘s never easy to create a sequel (or in this case, ‘sidequel‘?) to a classic. Especially one as beloved and foundational as WATCHMEN. This is a really good attempt, recreating the framework, style and pacing of the original while telling a new story. Especially exciting is the merging of worlds seen here as the DCU encounters characters and events from Alan Moore‘s creation. Solid, even if it never reaches the highs of its predecessor.

Got Absolute Watchmen on a whim from my library and the larger page scale makes such a difference. Gibbons' art absolutely soars from the bigger dimensions.

KathyWheeler I have the Absolute Sandman books and love them for that reason. I‘ve never seen the Absolute Watchmen before though. 2y

This is a pretty intriguing political thriller that might honestly be better if it had no connection to Watchmen at all. It's very contemporary in its exploration of conspiracy thinking, even as it has a retro feel with landlines, tape recorders, and Columbo references.

Ruthiella I ❤️ Colombo! 🕵️‍♀️ “Just one more thing…” 2y

Along with HBO's Watchmen and Doomsday Clock, Tom King's Rorschach is another entry in the genre of Watchmen sequel/spinoff. King uses the tropes of detective fiction to explore the nature of conspiracy thinking.

Bought this from Vintage Stock yesterday. Never read it. Just the movie (in which I hate most of the casting)

A nihilistic plot, horrible characters, graphic violence, wavering timeline and misogyny. I would have bailed but I spent money on this.

Amiable I finally read this a few years ago at the urging of my husband and son. I totally agree with you. 😖 4y
Nebklvr @Amiable The only positive is it did capture the fear of nuclear catastrophe at the time. Any time women were in the scene....rage inducing. 4y
Amiable @Nebklvr I said the same thing to my husband and son while I was reading it— they didn‘t understand my disgust. 😖 4y
Nebklvr @Amiable Some colleges teach it so I hope they spend some time acknowledging it. 4y

Ugh, what a slogging mess. Overly complicated and boring. I can't imagine reading the second half.

Bookwomble I'm sure Alan Moore was thrilled by this! 4y
RamsFan1963 Sadly, it just gets worse as it goes on. Gary Frank's artwork is outstanding but the story is a dumpster fire worthy of 2020. 4y
TieDyeDude @ramsfan1963 Yeah, I figured it wasn't much since I barely heard anyone talk about it. The art was excellent, though 4y
RamsFan1963 @TieDyeDude I expected better from Geoff John's, but from what I understand, there was quite a bit of interference from upper management. The whole idea of blending the Watchman universe with the mainline DC universe was just plain bad. 4y
TieDyeDude @RamsFan1963 The TV show was excellent, but even though capitalism won't allow it, they should leave it at one season and retire the Watchmen brand entirely. I don't see what they add to the DC universe... 4y

I have an awful habit of getting halfway through books and getting distracted by others! So I decided to dedicate December to finishing off all the books I left hanging. Managed to finish the bottom 5 already and am hopeful to finish at least another 4, my work schedule allowing 😂😂
