The basic story is simple- cruel murder happens in the Scottish village. What makes the book worth reading is the pictures and realistic description of the customs and traditions of life in the middle of the 19th century, but above all is an excellent and deep characterization. I read a book a week ago and my rate was then so-so and now, after a few days of reflection, I absolutely have no doubt in the jury's decision.

Simona @KVanRead My first reaction was- this is nothing special, this book don't belong among nominees. I'm glad that I gave it a time and now - I think about that story very often. And that's what good books can do😃 8y

Story spans over several decades in Chinese turbolentne history, which has dramatically changed lives of individuals and these political decisions forced people into immorality and silence. We follow history of the two generations of family who finds their freedom of speech in music and written word. The story is layered, dense and with the almost poetic prose, which is in contrast with the brutal content, but the final result is magnificent.

Simona @shawnmooney I'm on page 134, so it's difficult to say, but I like it so far. The story is of course sad, but is running steadily, despite the abundance of characters and switching between the time. 8y

The North Water | Ian McGuire

#favinaugust is North Water. The book is a perfect combination of brutality / violence / atrocity with great descriptive prose and characters that are all evil and I love it. The basic story (Whaling) develops on the several levels with a common point - survival.

Simona @brendanmleonard Hystopia was for me hard one, because of the writing style. Eileen cover is screenshot from iBook for book in Dutch. I have black one on my kindle and I refuse to buy it in paper form until I found the nicer one😳 8y

The Schooldays of Jesus | J.M. Coetzee

so-so

This book is a sequel to The Childhood of the Jesus (but I think it could also be read as a standalone) and it's, as the previous, the philosophical/allegorical work that deals with the idea of morality through passion. I didn't understand all the symbolism/references and so I don't know if it's okay to rate the book. I don't understand where author leads us with this morality tale/story ...maybe it will be more clear in the third part. But I ...

Simona ...like David the child (I assume that this is a Jesus) and is one of the best child character I have read. 8y
