HAPPY #BOOKSPIN DAY TO ALL WHO CELEBRATE!

It is my favorite day of the month and I am excited at what the draw has picked for me. It's nice that this month there's fantasy and scifi rather than just one or the other. My selections are the tagged and Red Mars. We'll see how far I get with my backlog this month as well.

Am I the only one reading this series who finds Laurence to be an insufferable twat? He literally refused to perform genocide at the end of the last book, and spends this entire book moping about it/sighing that he deserves to be killed for treason. To me, if you believe that what you did was right, then just blindly accepting the punishment for it makes no sense. Still an enjoyable read, but I'm here for Temeraire, not Eeyore-Laurence 😂

TheSpineView Fabulous! 10mo
Clare-Dragonfly I haven‘t gotten this far but Temeraire (and all the other dragons) is definitely much more of a draw than Laurence 😂 10mo

RamsFan1963 I never finished the series for that reason. Loved the dragons, loathed the humans 10mo
TheAromaofBooks @Clare-Dragonfly @RamsFan1963 - Like I kind of get it, but at the same time... it just feels like Laurence wants to be a martyr to his country all the time 🙄 10mo
SonjaBolon Laurence is a product of his time and culture so I give him that. I‘m there for Temeraire and learning about how humans and dragons coexist in different parts of the world! Japanese and South American dragons were both very different from each other as were their relationships with the humans. Africa surprised me in a good way! The whole series has turned my perception about us humans on its head! Naomi is good at helping us imagine anew! 10mo

Starting this series again as I stopped 2 books in the last time. Enjoyed this as much as I did the last time.

CrowCAH Temeraire is such a fun dragon 🐉!!! 10mo
Readergrrl You are reminding me about this series!! I read the first and always intended to continue. Maybe this is a sign? 10mo
Smarkies @Readergrrl I remembered it being fun and I am hoping to make it through the full series this time around. 😁 10mo
Smarkies @CrowCAH he is! The most lovable character! 10mo

This was the first book I got for kindle, back in 2009. It was free & languished on my TBR list until the Napoleonic prompt from #bookedintime. FINALLY read this. The Napoleonic Wars with dragons. Great world building and I‘m totally invested in finding out what‘s next for Temeraire. I‘m on a roll reading books with great dragon characters. Next up is Yarros‘s Iron Flame.

I hope #serieslove2023 goes to 2024. I keep adding new series! 🤦‍♀️

Cuilin Napoleon with dragons, love it!! ✅🎉 13mo

I‘d already read the first book, but borrowed this three-book volume for efficiency and the extra short story. Frankly, it‘s that story that saves this from being a so-so. The second and third Temeraire novels are very unevenly paced, swinging wildly from exciting, deadly peril to waiting boredom… realistic, I suppose, but not that satisfying to read! A lot of threads were just dropped. After the short story, I‘m rooting for Lien and Napoleon.

Does anyone else listen to Welcome to Night Vale? I was totally delighted to hear a reference to the Temeraire novels (a character is reading them to pass the time while doing something else) while I‘m reading them! 😄 #wtnv #serendipitu

TieDyeDude I used to listen to it when it first started, even went to a live show once. I forget when I stopped, I think around the time the second book came out. I didn't like the first book, and I started to lose interest in the podcast. That's cool that they are referencing real-world books, though. 1y
Clare-Dragonfly @TieDyeDude I read the first two books and didn‘t really like either of them. It‘s interesting that I continue to love the podcast even though the writers are the same and the media are not very different (I listened to the second book on audio). 1y

Finally got around to reading the next book in the Temeraire series. When I'm reading these books, I'm totally into them. When I'm not reading them, I don't care about them haha Novik uses a rather formal language for these to make them sound more old-fashioned. It mostly works, but also makes them come through as rather impersonal at times. I love the characters, the concept, and the story, but somehow these books just don't hook me in. ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) However, I'll definitely be continuing to read these. I'm enjoying purchasing the reissued (and absolutely gorgeous) paperbacks one at a time as I get to them.

Andrew65 Excellent! 👏👏👏 I keep thinking bout reading these. 1y
TheAromaofBooks @Andrew65 - I really do like them, but I haven't fallen in love with them. They're a bit serious for my taste, but still engaging. 1y
Andrew65 @TheAromaofBooks Good to know, thanks 😁 1y

2.5/5⭐ I liked the bond between Laurence and Temeraire, and the humor at the expense of Laurence's propriety. However, I could not get into the main plot of the war. #roll100

@BarbaraBB Here's my ATY progress! Screenshots are of prompts I've got left to do, with ideas.

BarbaraBB Thank you so much for sharing this. You‘re definitely going to complete it! I love your choice for a western 😂 I chose something similar 1y

I have a really short attention span until a book hooks me, truly i do, but when i say following this book (and the rest!) i will never hear 'I have an Idea' the same. Perhaps the most accurate short i can give without spoiling the entire series is that that phrase and draconic independence and pride are the motivations for everything not done by their exasperated and loving caretakers. Read/listen with no one nearby to hear random cackles.
