Pickpick

Some of my fav #Artist books.Tagging the one I haven't yet posted. Before he was famous, John Singer Sargent painted Virginie Gautreau with a fallen strap, intimating sex, which shattered her reputation. Repainted with both straps, it hangs today at the Met as "Madame X." Davis researched family papers, libraries, and private collections to weave together this fascinating history. Great read! #NewYearNewBooks @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

Suet624 It shattered her reputation? That‘s so infuriating. 11mo

Inspired by @BookmarkTavern . #PhotoChallenge #Scarathlon Day 3.

A number of these are by Tom Adams, who did the best Christie covers.

#FaceOnCover #MayMontage I had a mini version of this coffee table book in the 90s, and flipped through the portraits until the binding disintegrated. Like most people at the time, I was captivated by “Afghan Girl” and her striking green eyes, but even more than the 1984 National Geographic cover shot which was used for the cover of this Phaidon collection (left) I remember the controversy surrounding the photo in the 90s.👇🏼

IndoorDame It came out McCurry didn‘t know who she was, and he went back several times to look for her. He finally found her identity in 2002 and took a second series of photos (right) that stuck with me even more strongly. 2y

Michelle Obama‘s portrait by Amy Sherald. There‘s a good representation of her work as well as an interview/ segment on her in the HBO series Black Art: In the Absence of Light. I bought this book specifically to find out more about Amy. Maybe I can see her work in person some day. ❤️

Bookzombie Such a beautiful piece of art! 4y
Hooked_on_books I don‘t know if she was the artist, but I‘ll never forget the story of the little girl being mesmerized by MO‘s portrait in a museum and having all the doors in the world open up for her when she looked at it. Little black girls deserve to walk any path they choose and watching her respond to that portrait just brought tears to my eyes. (Edit: Just saw your previous post, and yes, she‘s the artist! 😆) (edited) 4y
