Granny O‘Malley did love to bring a few Scottish mercenaries into battle with her. I mean, can you blame her? The kilts and all. I just, she clearly wasn‘t a stupid woman. Then again, at that point at least some of the men were still wearing them in Ireland.

julesG Kilts? 6y
GingerAntics @julesG why is there a question mark? 6y
julesG Not sure about the historical period and whether kilts were a thing yet. Weren't they an invention of Robert Burns? My mind is a mushy lump today, so I might get all the things wrong. I've already done the most hilarious things today, started speaking English to my doctor for one thing. Well, I just keep remembering that kilts were the main mistake in Braveheart and that kilts came into fashion in 18th century. 6y

GingerAntics @julesG Kilts were worn for a while. They were worn before Robert Burns. They were wrong in Braveheart because in the 14th century they went into battle in tunics (so still no trousers). The modern kilt at knee length dates from the late 17th and early 18th centuries. I think they were an evolution from the tunic to the modern day kilt. The idea of family tartans is a complete fabrication and didn‘t exist until the Victorian period. 6y
julesG Thanks! I knew you'd know this. 6y
GingerAntics @julesG one of the best things I read on kilts said that the English got it into their heads somehow that each family had a tartan (probably because everyone in a particular family group would have clothes from a set of woven wool). When they went to Clan Chieftains to catalog all the family tartans, the chieftains laughed at them for getting it so wrong. Outlander got the colours wrong, too. Apparently the louder the colours the better. (edited) 6y
GingerAntics @julesG was your doctor surprised when you started speaking English? lol We‘ve thrown you off. I‘ll have to find the quote again where it talked about how everyone wanted bright yellows and oranges, because the fashion was the louder and brighter the better. lol (edited) 6y
julesG The doctor took it in her stride. I also noticed half a sentence in. That brought us to talk about my last stay at the hospital when she spoke fluent French with another patient. I just speak/read/write/think too much in English. 6y
GingerAntics @julesG wow, talented doctor!!! Here, they may be good at medicine, but most of them only know English. I think that‘s an American thing, though. 6y
julesG It's the one hospital in the area where the British troops still stationed in the area, and their families, are treated. So, most resident doctors speak English, although there are liason officers. She told me she spent a year in France when she was 16, long before she even decided to study medicine. Pretty cool. I really like her. 6y
GingerAntics @julesG sounds like an awesome doctor 6y
