⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I enjoyed this more than I expected to. Silver digs into what the calls “The River,” characterized by people who take big, calculated risks in order to maximize payoffs and profiles and interviews professional gamblers, Silicon Valley founders, cryptocurrency inventors and others to illustrate several related concepts. The last few chapters include a philosophical look at the potential outcomes of AI. It was interesting.

Although the idiom #DownForTheCount is sports metaphor that expresses a negative outcome for whoever or whatever the speaker is referencing, for some reason it made me think of counting cards & laying them down.
I chose this book & “21” the movie made from it where 6 MIT math students used counting cards in Blackjack to get more than 3 million $$$ from Vegas casinos. ♠️♥️♣️♦️
Good premise but quite sad and cold lives the characters live! It was way too long and could have been written in such a way that a reader would care more about the characters. Also we are left wondering about the status of Toby…

This is as fabulous as I remembered as when first read! Lost Fisher King, lots of T.S. Eliot, poker played with Tarot cards, ancient archetypes, and a battle for souls set in Las Vegas, a kingdom in the desert created by mobster Bugsy Siegel. In March of 1951, testifying before a Senate Crime Committee, Virginia Hill stated that Siegel had told her the Flamingo Hotel was upside down-though she was able to cast no light on what he might have meant.
@ShyBookOwl thanks for the tag!

This was pretty disappointing for me. I couldn't connect with any of the characters. I also didn't think that the author did a good job of handling some of the issues that she tied into the book. The situations & relationships were too unbelievable. This was a ⭐⭐⭐ read for me. But it was my #doublebookspin square 18! @TheAromaofBooks
This was fascinating.
Bloom is very much the heroine of her tale. And that‘s ok by me.
She captures the straddling she did between awestruck small-town girl & ambitious entrepreneur perfectly, so the audience can experience it vicariously.
Really great listen.
Only complaint - my version didn‘t have an update on her legal troubles. That should be added for future readers/listeners.
