A friend lent me this older book from her shelf. Published in 2001 and sub titled “A Year of the Plague” - I wasn‘t feeling much excitement to read this so it sat by the bed for 6 months. I finally picked it up over Xmas & then completely devoured it. It‘s a beautifully written & researched historical fiction, told in 1st person from a young woman living within a small English village in 1665 & her town has been closed off due to plague outbreak.

Megbert The plot is driven by really strong and complex female characters. Everything was so well woven together and tied up with a very unexpected twist at the end. Will certainly be seeking out some more Geraldine Brooks writing! 2d
HettyG I loved this one, it was in my top five of 2024. I also really loved People of the Book by this author. 2d

Among Ghosts | Rachel Hartman

My absolute favorite of Rachel Hartman‘s books.

Charl is a young boy trying to deal with a plague, protecting his mother, a dragon, and his sudden ability to see ghosts.

#MiddleGradeMonday @Karisimo @Daisey

Daisey I enjoyed Seraphina; I‘ll have to look this one up too. 6d
Clare-Dragonfly Is this in the same world as Seraphina? I‘m not usually into middle grade but I loved those books. 5d

Interesting history of the Black Plague outbreak in Europe in the mid-1300s. I liked all the quotes and stories about individuals living at the time. Kelly also devotes an appropriate amount of text to the cruel atrocities committed by Christians against Jews using wild conspiracy theories as their excuse.

Black Death in London | Barnie Sloane

The Black Death in London, by Barney Sloane (2011)
⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

Premise: A look at the impact of the Black Death on the city of London and environs.

Review: This book‘s greatest success is in its incredible detail. Sadly that‘s also it‘s greatest weakness. Even as someone very nerdy about history, archaeology, and public health, the level of detail here was overwhelming and felt unnecessary. ⬇️

Mattsbookaday This means that it‘s very good in what it does, but also that I can‘t really recommend it. But if you are SUPER interested in 14th-century wills, have at ‘er. 5mo

A new Rachel Hartman book is cause for celebration in this house! Set in Goredd centuries before Seraphina or Tess of the Road, Among Ghosts is a Decameron-inspired tale of plague, memory, religious violence, and the courage it takes to pursue freedom, truth, peace, and community.

After escaping his abusive father, Charl & his mother find refuge in a small town. Life becomes more complicated when a dragon comes into town hunting them, a plague sweeps through, & Charl can suddenly see ghosts.

Lovely.I was enraptured & felt angry when I had to stop reading to go back to work. I adore Hartman‘s world building. Charl was a wonderful protagonist. He acts his age, but is also kind. Need to dive back into the world.🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗

I am slow going on this challenge because I‘m also reading other books not on the list ( Bookclubs, buddy reads, sister said I had to drop everything and read The Correspondent by Virginia Evans), but I did finish the first of my #14BooksIn14Weeks
This is a lovely debut novel about a midwife & herbalist in Avignon, France during the 1300s black plague.
I‘m finding myself drawn to midwives and herbalists …

Liz_M Nice stack! Persepolis is one of free graphic books that worked for me. 7mo
tpixie @Liz_M yes, I don‘t necessarily enjoy reading graphic novels either. I have the first one of Persepolis & enjoyed it a few years ago #blameitonlitsy , so during #indiebookstoreday when I saw the complete set I decided to buy it! 7mo
