I'm not sure what I think of the overall prose style of this as a picture book, but this page made me sob. I honestly don't know if I'd still be here if it wasn't for Ursula Nordstrom.

4 ⭐This is a wonderful biography of a woman who combined science and art to make a name for herself. Her discoveries helped prove they were mountains under the water, and that continental drift was a real thing. This book is lovingly done and well illustrated. For a children‘s picture book it‘s done in the first person which is highly unusual but very effective. This is a great biography for any library collection.

3 ⭐ This is a brief introduction to Ralph Waldo Emerson for children. It is very well done, even though when I look at it, I think of Mr. Lincoln. There is nothing wrong with this book per se I just found it a tad bit boring.

4 ⭐This book chronicles Sophie Blanchard, the first woman to go solo in a hot air balloon. She was one of the first female aeronauts. Little is known of her life before marrying Jean Pierre Blanchard, a famous aerialist of the time. This is a great beginning look at woman who dared to do what many thought only men could do. Finding out that Sophie died so young, due to a fire and a fall from her balloon, is heartbreaking but also real.

Caroline's Comets: A True Story | Emily Arnold McCully

Using excerpts from her autobiography, this #PictureBook tells of Caroline Herschel‘s contributions to astronomy…the Hunter of Comets. Caroline definitely did not have an easy early life! I learned a lot about Caroline and her brother William, who also made some impressive contributions to astronomy. #BBRC #LetterC

With a calm, flowing text, this #PictureBook bio looks at Edward Hopper and his somewhat slow rise to fame in the art world. I really like the illustrations complementing Hopper‘s actual works as the text describes Hopper‘s life and feelings. Bio and bibliography at the end provide more in-depth info on Hopper and his works. #BBRC #LetterE

JamieArc I recently read the tagged book of short stories where the author chose a Hopper painting and wrote a story inspired by it. Some were great, some were meh, BUT it was so fun to keep flipping to the painting, copied at the beginning of the story, to see what was being referenced. 1y

#VolumesAndVocals Day 16: The picturebook biography I am holding has #RocketManEltonJohn feels to it. Taken at the House of Wisdom in Sharjah as my undergraduate students (and PhD student who took the we-fie) and I do our data collection around libraries here in the UAE as we build a UN SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) Diverse Picturebook list. More here: https://gatheringbooks.org/un-sdg-booklist/

I remember my Mom telling me, when I was little, that homeless people were mostly men. But organizations like the UN say that more women then men live in poverty. So when I glanced at a kid‘s book and saw that it was about the first shelter for women, that was OPENED IN 1974. I had to pick it up. We visited the moon before we opened a shelter for women. I‘m going to need more books about Kip Tiernan, if anyone can rec them.
