SLOW DANCE. | RAINBOW. ROWELL

Bailedbailed

I‘d never read a Rainbow Rowell book, so when I saw this on the library shelf I figured I‘d give it a try. Almost 100 pages in and I‘m throwing in the towel. The main character is annoying, the dialogue is trite and stilted… and the worst offense? It‘s just so incredibly boring. 😖 Moving on.

Aims42 Oof, that‘s a lot of very valid reasons to bail 🫠 Onto better books! #Hailthebail 🚀 2d
Prairiegirl_reading I‘ve only read one Rainbow Rowell and I felt pretty much the same but I finished. 😕 (edited) 2d
freeatlast1137 I haven‘t read this one, but I can agree on her writing style. I have struggled to finish her books. 2d

Amiable @Prairiegirl_reading @freeatlast1137 I tried so hard to push through but got to a point where I thought, “why am I wasting valuable reading time on this?” I was surprised because I‘d heard good things about her books. This did not meet expectations at all. 😖 1d
Amiable @Aims42 My sentiments exactly! 🚀🌞 1d
Prairiegirl_reading @Amiable I am typically an unapologetic bailer but sometimes I have times where I think I should be better at finishing so that‘s probably why I finished. My comment was meant to be more of a “bad on me.” Too many good books!! 1d
Amiable @Prairiegirl_reading oh, I‘m with you! It took me a long time to get to a place where I could bail —I always felt obligated to finish what I‘d started. I still feel kind of guilty when I do. But the older you get the more you realize how little time you have left to read all the really good books out there —so you can‘t waste that time on the bad ones! (edited) 22h

4/5 ⭐️

What journey it was reading this book. It‘s a beautiful friends to lover‘s relationships that seems to be, always, taking place at a bad timing. These characters are facing many challenges throughout the course of their relationship. Life has a way to trace your future sometimes that make you wonder, what if? When they meet again at their best friend wedding their past and present collide.

This seemed so light and fluffy after Navalny, but it was enjoyable even if Shiloh did really grate on my nerves at times. Perhaps Rowell wanted to portray her as authentic, but I did see her as a bit of an attention seeker. Her high school relationship with Cary drove me a little insane. I did like Cary, both mothers and Juniper.

Wasn't sure if I'd enjoy this as it could have been twee. I've read one other of hers, a YA, but wanted to see how she does grown up books.
And not disappointed! Unlike my usual choices but thoroughly comforting and positive.

Besties since they were 13, Shiloh and Cary are reunited at the wedding of another friend after a 14 year estrangement. The will they/won't they aspect of their relationship is obvious and ultimately this is more about the journey than the destination. I enjoyed the read.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I don‘t feel like I ever understood the main characters in this story but I did think their families, setting, and children (especially the children) were all written realistically. It was character driven, and Rowell did a great job compelling me forward.
I also loved it being set in 2006. The amount of times this woman put on a dress over her jeans - excellent. I think this was written specifically for us, elder millennials. Enjoy 💕

I feel like this is a book that you need to be in the right frame of mind to read. It's relationship centered versus action/thriller, etc. That being said, I loved it! The characters were authentic and real and it was the perfect book to read outside on this beautiful day.

The World Record Book of Racist Stories | Amber Ruffin, Lacey Lamar

I think I loved this more than the first. Probably because I read the other in print and listened to the audio this time around. Hearing both Lacey and Amber tell their stories (and sing their songs) felt like they were in the room with me just talkin. 4 out of 5 stars because it could use some editing and feels more like recorded conversations than a book, but the content is hilarious, sad, infuriating, and most of all IM👏🏾POR👏🏾TANT👏🏾

TieDyeDude I had the opposite experience. I listened to the first on audio and read this. It definitely read like a transcribed conversation; not ideal. I'd like to give it another go on audio sometime, though. 8mo

Standing Bear was a Ponca chief who fought for the rights of his tribe. Despite continuously being moved from place to place, with no control over where they were sent, he was a calm and steady prescience for his people. They wanted to work the land in peace & he was able to fight for that right in court. It's an incredible & heartbreaking story. If you want to learn more about the Trail of Tears and what it was truly like, please read this one.
