Attentat | Amelie Nothomb

Pickpick

Even though not my favorite book by Nothomb, it's still a typical Amelie Nothomb book and therefore worth reading (for me). Once again she digs into the topic of beauty. Epiphane is heavily deformed and therefore called ugly. But he makes it work for him. But lives a beautiful soul in an ugly body? Or is he just as superficial as we all are? A perfidious little piece written by the master herself.

I‘ve had this book sitting on my shelf for ages, so finally decided to dive in. The story definitely went places I wasn‘t expecting and was, frankly, shocking at times. That said, the book is almost entirely dialogue that rips along with a twist at the end. Fair warning, the main character is misogynist and vile and his dialogue is too. It wasn‘t a perfect book, so a low pick. #europacollective

I like her sarcastic style and exquisite approach on common philosophical themes with unusual and peculiar characters and circumstances.

Zoile and Astrolabe experience a love story so unique and disappointing that Zoile decides to comit suicide by highjacking an airplane to destroy the Eiffel Tour.

"To love a place, you have to see it from above. This must be why we imagine God above the Earth: otherwise how would he be able to love us?"

The incipit is a tribute to the biographic event of Dostoevsky and to Aureliano Buendia from the 100 years of solitude. The book tells about the simple and grotesque life of a diplomatic man, one of the most important of the Belgian society. My first book by Nothomb, the first of a long list. #firstblood #amelienothomb #nothomb
