I‘m only recently getting back into reading bits of poetry here and there. I picked this up and I‘m finding that I really need to take my time with Milosz‘s writing. I‘m finding it extremely melancholy and weighty, pondering meaning in life and nature. It‘s a lot. Has anyone read this collection or his other writing? I‘m curious what others take from his work. Thoughts?

Soul Mountain | Gao Xingjian

I'm tarrying for quite a while in Asia on my #ReadingAroundTheWorld tour. So many amazing works to explore! Today I found this lovely gem from Gao Xingjian at a local indie bookstore called Grey Matter Books-- "used books for scholars and holy fools"! #China #NobelPrizeWinners

cajunsyd I read that book a few years ago and struggled with it quite a bit. The lack of proper names and other aspects made it difficult to follow at times. I should try it again though, it is meant to be a beautiful book. Can‘t wait to hear what you think. 7y

Louise @cajunsyd @Melwilk It's so interesting to hear your perspectives. Flipping through it, I see that he experiments with the personal pronouns in his exploration of self and world. It's going to be an unusual read! Will post when I've finished it! 7y

What a beautiful, frightening book. This is my first Herta Müller, & I'll be back for more. Translated from German, it follows a couple living under Ceausescu's dictatorship in Romania. One of them works for the secret police. In many ways it mirrors her own life of standing up to the secret police & fleeing Romania to live in Germany. It's a short but savory book with gorgeous & haunting prose about life under totalitarianism. Scary & timely. ?
