David Tennant is my favorite Doctor & one of my favorite actors, so I jumped at the chance to listen to him narrate. And who doesn't love James Bond?

Me. I don't love James Bond. Not as books - I enjoy the films as much as the next person. The books are dated & problematic in places, but that's understandable. IMO, the action scenes translate so much better to film, even with such a great narrator.

I recently read my first Fleming, which has an early opening scene in a casino.
Michael Mechanic's nf “Jackpot“ also has some memorable scenes in it regarding the excesses of the wealthy.

I didn‘t like this student‘s version much because it left out the whole voodoo narrative. i am not sure if it was particularly thrilling for my students. But then the original is so full of stereotypes and degrading language at least this was not given in this version.

I am currently reading four different novels with four different classes. Of course they are the students versions which are easier and have less different narratives but I get mixed up a lot - especially when the lessons are one after another. Last time it told the students The Hound of the Baskervilles was written by Ian Fleming. 🙈

Ian Fleming, I'm pretty sure that women have never smelt like a combination of freshly mown hay and sweet pepper, I can not even imagine what that smells like. That's some imagination!

This book is of course filled with the usual racism and misogyny found in the previous books but that aside there's something compelling about these, the ridiculousness of the plot I guess is enough to keep me turning those pages.

There did seem to be far less problematic content in this entry compared to the first two books and it was great to see Bond blown out by a woman finally!

These books are a real eye opener for me, I was always under the impression that Bond was a super spy, intelligent, no one could fool Bond. However he comes across very ditzy to me, easily fooled and not particularly clever.

Pikathulhu The books definitely portray a very different Bond than the movies! 2y
Michellesibs @Pikathulhu I'm starting to realise the extent of this! So different x 2y

Pickpick

Took the 003rd Bond book to Digby‘s in Pall Mall. After a delicious Louis XIII pizza, cooked by guest chef Renato Viola & a desert of strawberries in Kirsch I retired to the lounge. I sat in a 1950s Howard & Sons Bridgwater chair, slightly angled towards the Adam fireplace with its cozy heat, & devoured this novel. The antiquated attitudes to woman left a sour taste but I washed this away with a glass of Wolfschmidt vodka and a dash of pepper.

Vansa My favourite Bond novel. Actually I think this book has among the best, and most badass female characters ever in Gala Brand, who saves the day ( as most women do, in Fleming's novels). 2y
The_Book_Ninja It‘s true. She only faints once😂 2y

Bond is sent over to the States to tackle some secret business in New York and then in Jamaica. The language around Black people in this book is horrendous so you need to be aware at that.
I found myself laughing my head off at a comment about a receptionist being too pretty, a reception area needs someone with less looks and more brains! Ugh these books are something.
There's a lot to overlook in these books in terms of race and gender.
