This is the first book in the lady violet series. She is a widow just out of mourning. She is going to her first house party based on her doctor‘s recommendation. Someone is stealing jewelry and other things from the guests. Lady Violet investigates with her 2 friends to see what‘s going on. Nice cozy historical mystery.

Mehso-so

Grace Burrowes is trying something new : she released a series of romantsy mysteries featuring Lady Violet. I just finished book 4 - Lady Violet Enjoys a Frolic . I didn‘t like the mystery in this one and I found the story very unbelievable. I do like Lady Violet‘s romantic adventures. I suspect a twist will happen at the end of the series. Because I‘m borrowing from Libby I‘ve read book 3 &4 and I think book 6 is available next. So far a so-so

A good start to an historical mystery series from a favorite historical romance author of mine. Lady Violet emerges from two years of mourning a philandering but otherwise amiable husband unsure and unenthusiastic about a house party that a physician friend has talked her into attending. She becomes drawn into some thefts among the guests and aided by Hugh (a French physician) and Sebastian (a childhood friend who is now a marquess), 🔻

robinb she begins to investigate. I must admit that I had guessed part of the denouement, but it‘s the writing that makes Burrowes‘ books such a pleasure. She imbues her characters with dry wit and charm, and their dialogue/dialect feels like it is authentic to the time…her books are always a joy for me to become immersed in. There‘s a possible love triangle here, but it‘s not prominent. 🔻 3y
robinb I think that will be a slow-developing arc. At 220 pages, this had a bit of a “cozy” mystery feel for those who enjoy that genre. I‘m definitely in for the long haul. 4/5 3y
Laughterhp I‘ll have to check this one out! I love historical mysteries. 3y
robinb @Laughterhp I hope you do and would love to hear what you think. I love her writing style and her humor. 😊 3y

No Other Duke Will Do | Grace Burrowes
Bailedbailed

Bailing at about 50% because I'm finding the way an autistic side character is being discussed kind of skin crawling. No thank you!

A quick, sweet Victorian romance centering around a rake trying to reform himself and his reputation and the woman who has complete faith in him when no one else does (including his family). The love-at-first-sight for Tristan would have been a bit hard to believe, but due to the brevity of the book (230 pgs.), I took it in stride. My second book from this author, and I‘ve enjoyed both for their sweet, heartwarming stories. Well written. 4/5⭐️

I am devoting today to reading some of my “in the middle of” books. Just finished this lovely #romantsy that takes place at a house party hosted by Julian , Duke of Haverford. Julian is handsome but he is drowning in debt , Elizabeth Windham is more interested in lending libraries than marriage. Of course sparks fly and problems occur but there‘s a happy ending 💕💕😀

Hoopla has some sweet #romantsy audiobooks. A rake comes across a lovely innocent crying in the garden. Of course he falls in love and of course tribulations ensue but don‘t worry there‘s a happy ending 😀🐉
