I got halfway in and then skimmed the last couple of chapters. Does that constitute a bail?

I wanted more subtlety of plot & character development and less on “I must have gone mad with lust….I thought of nothing but sex.” 🤣

Although this is one of my favorite authors, I didn‘t buy this immediately when it was released. I was hesitant to read a story about passengers on the Titanic. After all, we know basically what happened. I was wrong. This is a well written, thoroughly researched novel about family dynamics and the choices we make - not only how they affect us, but those around us. Definitely worth reading.

Reading time in doctor‘s office, with both hubby‘s Kindle and mine on my lap while he‘s having his procedure. Getting lots of reading done.

Favorite of 4/30 - 5/11

It won‘t make my top books of the year list but it was good.

I had started a book not in the database, a historical romance that was described as steamy. I bailed. I‘m no prude, but it was just over the top. Instead, I‘m going to start this new novel by one of my favorite authors.

This is a different historical fiction!

Although The Maiden in the title refers to Scotland‘s guillotine it is a story of women in 1600‘s whose lives are dictated by the men and fate. A mother trying to raise two daughters after the father gambles away their funds, a man grooming a young girl for his future pleasure and abusing every other female in his path, a man who needs a wife but doesn‘t want one. The women trying to survive the hand they‘ve been dealt. 4🌟

I very much enjoyed The Household. There‘s a fantastic cast of characters and it‘s beautifully written. Charles Dickens even features! It‘s an interesting plot line with a few twists and turns. I liked that it was about a real house, Urania House, one of Charles Dickens‘ projects, a home for fallen women funded by Coutts bank. An absorbing and engaging read.

I enjoyed this book a lot, loved the characters and especially the prayers.
I thought Western weren‘t my thing, but I love to try new things (okay, only book related, I actually don‘t like trying new things 😬) and I will definitely check out other books from the series and like I said in a previous post I already put other books by Kristina Hall on my TBR. 😊
