Mehso-so

So this was a weird book. There seems to be a lot of love for it out there but I can only give it a so-so. The story is based on the IRL #gamergate. I'm not a gamer, but I found the story to be both horrifying and interesting that there's was this whole section of society so opposed to working with women. ⬇️

DrexEdit In order to recreate the“voice“ of the nameless, faceless internet, a good portion of the book is narrated in the first person collective invisible. It was weird to get into and not terribly easy to stay with as narrators kept changing. (edited) 3y
DrexEdit In the end I think we just got a#gamergate story and not any real insights into the events of#gamergate. 3y

-The foreword by Joss Whedon was so cringy.
-1st half of the book did not hold my attention as she talked about family life, being homeschooled and college and being an over achiever.
-2nd half was great, I love the Guild and when we got into that portion I was hooked! The Guild, her struggles with anxiety and depression and #GamerGate were discussed in the last half and it was humorous while still being vulnerable and relatable.

Inspired by #gamergate, and written during his brief time here in Richmond, Va, Eric Smith tells the tale of two teens who meet online through a game. One of them is a popular female online streamer who is being targeted by a vicious, jealous troll mob, and one is a teen boy who wants to write for video games, despite his mother's expectations that he follow her doctor footsteps. Alternately adorable, enraging, and deep, I loved this book!

Zoe Quinn was the eye of the Internet storm known as #gamergate. Some claim it was about “ethics in videogame journalism”, but the truth is so much scarier. The details are upsetting, but this has good steps for combating cyberbullying & keeping your information safe. Through it all, Quinn manages to tell her story with humor & even has a positive spin on the outcome. A must read especially if you know very little of the Internet. - Ivy
