This story grabs you from the start with its raw, gritty intensity, pulling you into a world where every detail feels alive. It‘s a relentless, heart-pounding ride that‘s impossible to put down.

A well-researched book on the narcotics trade, covering everything from production in South America to trafficking through Central America and consumption in the U.S. and Europe. The author clearly explains the economics of the trade, why current control methods are failing, and explores better strategies for mitigation. It‘s an engaging, insightful, and accessible read.

A memoir of journalist Emily Witt‘s trips and wild parties often with her love interest/object of obsession Andrew. She describes a few experiences that I found interesting (Ayahuasca, specifically) but mostly it‘s a repetitive journal of the hard partying scene in nyc. The second half of the book included some more of her experiences covering stories for various publications. Less than impressed with this.

A well researched book on the opium plant and its impact on all aspects of society during the eighteen and nineteenth century. It was this plant that provided a lion share of the capital needed for European colonization. A lot of the wealthiest Americans made their fortune from this trade before they diversified into other ventures.

Listening to Go Ask Alice while I work on this artsy puzzle. I found a woman reading this book on YouTube. I was a little worried at first since the narrator seemed to be untrained, which is totally fine, but it held my attention the whole way through. While her tone was a little monotone, she was consistent and read solidly throughout the novel. This book is wild, and there is so much controversy behind it!

⭐️⭐️⭐️ A frequently challenged book that I finally picked up after it, as well as its debunker, Unmask Alice, were both recently referenced on a podcast (I can‘t remember which one). Originally published by “Anonymous,” this claimed to be a real diary written by a real girl who gets mixed up with all the drugs. The controversy over its authenticity is fascinating, and absolutely influenced my opinion.

KathyWheeler I was 14 when this was published and read it multiple times. I can‘t decide if it would have mattered to me if I‘d known it was fake. 4mo
BarbaraBB Oh this is the one I wrote about in a comment at your review! I read it in Dutch. They were even translated 😉 4mo
britt_brooke @KathyWheeler I think that‘s a very good point considering age. I care now, but would I have at 14? Likely not. 4mo
KathyWheeler @britt_brooke Exactly! I care now too, but back then I was the exact audience for this book and didn‘t know it was fake. 4mo

I have a shelf full of #coffee cups but often end up just using the same one over and over. Last Christmas my brother-in-law gave me a mug from a place they had visited in the summer on vacation, and that became my go-to cup.

Sunday night my husband called the VP a rude name.

I left my go-to mug in the car Tuesday, so I think I‘ll switch over to this one for a while.

I tend to enjoy the beginning of true crime books because it deals with the life and history of the players and sets up the context of the crime. I invariably lose interest when the investigation narrative starts. The same was true for this book as well.
