Spoilers abound in this book that examines a variety of tropes in pop culture/film & television. While I didn‘t find anything earth-shattering in the author‘s observations or conclusions, it did piss me off. Admittedly, I live in a rage-filled emotional state these days, but I‘m an American woman and all you have to do is look at our elected officials to understand the anger. The essence of the book is this: Fuck. The. Patriarchy.

Leftcoastzen I was curious about this one ! 2w
BookmarkTavern I haven‘t read this yet. But two thumbs up for your review! 2w
GingerAntics Sounds like a good book to me! 2w

The Anthropology class I took was a disaster, but this book was its saving grace. I actually enjoyed the readings and learned far more than I had expected. I encourage anyone to take an anthropology or sociology class if they can. I mentioned earlier that is it just so fascinating to know that you aren‘t all that different from someone from far away, yet you can learn new ways of existing as well. As we say with our boys, “Different, not less.”

Megabooks I fell in love with Cultural Anthropology in undergrad and ended up making it one of my minors. I don't use it much today, but I truly enjoyed studying it! 1mo
AshleyHoss820 @Megabooks Were I a younger woman when taking this course, I think I would have changed majors. I always wanted to go into forensic anthropology! It‘s such a feather in your cap and I love that you had that experience! ☺️🧡 1mo

The title here is Pilgrims by M.R. Leonard, his literary debut. I‘d call it speculative scifi & when i describe it it sounds ludicrous.

Earth is under oppressive martial law awaiting a coming alien invasion. 🛸👽

The aliens land. The aliens are devout Catholics.🧐

Sounds like satire. It is not.

Our main character is a Latin teacher that discovers studying Classics in college was a crackerjack major after all. 🤯

Ruthiella Sounds good. Maybe I will nominate it for the next #LitsySciFiBookClub pick. 🚀 3mo

I‘m a leftist. The policies I want to see enacted are basic, and just common sense. I started paying attention to politics late in the game, and I‘ve learned a lot since then. One thing I‘ve learned, is that it‘s ugly. It‘s dirty. There is constant infighting, especially on the left. Things work, when we work as a team. I get really irritated sometimes when the fighting is petty; I‘ll give some examples. At clinic, we suddenly had an⬇️

JenniferEgnor interest from others in the community to come stand at the fence as clinic defenders, to counter the harassers. I saw so much fighting between them, and that didn‘t help us, the staff, or the patients. They would fight each other over ridiculous things. Two of my closest guy friends used to be cops; we met long after this. When clinic defenders learned this, they hated them and refused to speak to them. When Roe was about to fall, one of⬇️ 3mo

Some of the clinic defenders were enraged that a man organized it, and utilized a megaphone to share. How dare he! (We need men to stand and speak with us—they‘ve been silent for too long). There was another time when one of my clinic escorts was talking to a clinic defender, and the subject of shampoo arose. It led to the caution label, warning not to⬇️ 3mo

I can assure you, this kid was not autistic. One more example. I have heard it said to not use the word ‘crazy‘ or ‘insane‘ because it offends someone who isn‘t mentally well. I get it, but at the same time…to say it‘s wrong to use the words even in a general way,⬇️ 3mo
JenniferEgnor not referring to any individual…is just a bit much. So with all of this being said, I could go on. I don‘t agree with everything the author says, but I get where he‘s coming from and I do understand a lot of it. What we must always remember is to think, speak, and act in a way that reflects love, never hate. Be on guard for the vile things you know are wrong and call it out every time you see it. Because there are some things, that we cannot⬇️ 3mo

#Two4Tuesday @TheSpineView

1. Last year, Universal Studios in Osaka Japan!

2. No. There's barely time to get to all the stuff we want to see/do/ride, let alone read.

TheSpineView Japan sounds like a wonderful trip! Thanks for playing! 5mo
The_Penniless_Author @jewright Easily the best trip we've taken. If you're ever able to save up the money and time to do it, don't hesitate. It's an easy country to get around, not intimidating at all. Even the most mundane things are interesting to someone who's not from there, so you don't even need a lot of planning. We still visited a decent number of tourist sites, but often just wandering around, shopping and using public transportation was as much fun. 5mo

Ruthiella Thanks for the tag! I‘ve not been to an amusement park in decades and I would never take a book for the same reasons you cite. 5mo
dabbe Will do; thanks for the tag! 😊 5mo
jewright @The_Penniless_Author—My grandfather was stationed there after WWII, so my dad was actually born in Japan. I grew up hearing lots of stories, so I‘ve always wanted to go. 5mo

#SummerSouls Day 19: In the Author‘s Note, Eva Chen spoke about the “meteoric rise in anti-Asian sentiment” during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, inspiring her to write this story, paradoxically at a time when she was advising her own parents to wear #sunglasses – and essentially remain invisible so as to not let people realize they are Asians.
