A story about dealing with frustration when plans don't go as planned. Even more reassuring in life during covid-shut downs. ("...storytime was cancelled.") The repeatition in the text and illustrations helps both vocab building and depicting time passing. The endpages are a child's calendar which could tie into early math studies. #dw2020reads #campreadalot2020

Feels like this is written for adult fans of Margaret Wise Brown. It's a fanciful biography not meant to give a linear account of MWB's life. A strange story, by its own admission. This next bit is oddly specific but... (continued in next comment) #dw2020reads #campreadalot2020

cozypunk ... If / when, I read this to kids, I'll divided it into 3 parts: p1-19, p18-47, and p34-42 followed by a MWB book or two. These are not natural dividing points, but I feel like these 3 sections could make a good series of short stories. There's enough foreshadowing and callbacks to keep the 3 connected. 4y

So lovely! A modern, magical story without the old-fashioned fairy tale tropes. (Spoilers in my next comment.) Illustrations are easy to see and the use of the black background is so clever! The text allows for lots of open ended questions, like 'What will happen next?' or 'Why did Little Star made that choice?' #dw2020reads #campreadalot2020

cozypunk I liked how Little Star was independent, doing her own chores and walking to the moon on her own. She turns a simple activity into a adventure. Even though Mama isn't in the story much, it's clear she and Little Star have a fun bond. I definitely want to read more by Grace Lin! 4y

A NF chapter book adapted from its adult version. I don't know where to start, so my observations at random: Narrative is all over the place. So many tangents. Doesn't focus on Ona until ch 17. Title is a minomer. Would've been better as historial fiction. Too many "could, may, might have" verbs in what's suppose to be a nonfiction book.

Good if you want the the broad context of slavery b/w the American Revolution & Civil War. #dw2020reads

TheAromaofBooks I get really frustrated when “for young reader“ editions just remove huge chunks of information and simplify the words that are left without much attempt at recreating the connections that have been removed. I read a young reader's edition of Call of the Wild earlier this year and the story literally did not make sense because they had just removed parts of the story without bothering to to connect the parts that were left! 4y

A thin biograhpy but jam-packed with rich vocabulary, illustrations, and STEAM concepts. For teachers & homeschoolers & sciencey parents, this book is an appealing way to introduce physics, engineering, and mechanics (and more that I can't think of at the moment). #dw2020reads #campreadalot2020
