I can't possibly pick favorites from this list. So random thoughts, instead:

🩵 Up is my favorite movie ever. It warms my icy heart. I cry 3 times during it to this day.
🩵 Philip Seymour Hoffman was one of my favorite actors. I'm so sad he died so young.
🩵 When Pulp Fiction came out, our local art theatre showed it during their Oscar series, and a bunch of elderly ladies who were regulars walked out in disgust. 🤣🫠

dabbe I gulp-sob snot out of my nose every time I watch the opening of UP! 😭 Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩵💙🩵 9h
dabbe Fab score, too! 🤩🤩🤩 9h
lil1inblue @dabbe Yeah, the opening scene is definitely an ugly cry for me, too. 😭 And the score is because the era covers my high school years, when I had a crush on a boy who wanted to become Stanley Kubrick. 😂 He broke my teenaged heart, but he also introduced me to so many good films! 😉 8h
dabbe @lil1inblue At least one good thing came out of it! 🤗 6h

Wonderful! I will have to plan an entire day for watching Al‘s 🎥 ‘cause somehow, I‘ve not seen many of them😳

I absolutely love listening to autobiographies/memoirs that are read by the author(s). I‘m always fascinated & intrigued by their life experiences.

MemoirsForMe Agreed! Love when celebs narrate their own books and need to see more Pacino films after this great read. 🙌🏻 3w
DieAReader @MemoirsForMe 💖🎬So many movies to watch!! 3w
CoverToCoverGirl I‘m excited for this one, but my library hold is still several weeks away. 3w

I‘ve always had the hots for Al Pacino, so spending time with him via his memoir was a real treat. ☺️ You get to meet the incorrigible kid, the deeply passionate thespian & the self-reflective guy behind all those iconic movie characters. Al speaks fondly of his boyhood friends, mentors, fellow actors & his many loves who are still friends, and he‘s simply charming and quite funny! I did get to see him in a play on Broadway in ‘77: Ooh la la!

MemoirsForMe Thank you @Sleepswithbooks for the gift of this sexy man‘s memoir. Now I can‘t wait to rewatch his many movies. 🤗❤️ 1mo

Shakespeare: The Man Who Pays the Rent | Judi Dench, Brendan O'Hea

This was a delight. Brendan O‘Hea and Dame Judi cover her extensive work in numerous productions of Shakespeare‘s plays. In the audio, Judi recites famous lines from memory and her reminiscences are read by Barbara Flynn. Their discussions reveal a spirited kind woman in love with her craft and the words of the man who pays the rent. I am inspired to watch Judi‘s past performances. 4.5 ⭐️

I‘m just getting around to some thank you notes and wanted to say thank you @dabbe for this lovely holiday gift. I‘ve had it on my TBR and I‘m really looking forward to reading it. This was a rare book that I visited twice - once to read, another to listen. If you are a fan of Dame Judi Dench or Shakespeare even in the slightest, I recommend this book. Due to her failing eyesight, Dame Judi‘s participation in the audio book was kept to recitation of Shakespeare passages she knows by heart. Barbara Flynn‘s (Cracker, Return to Paradise) interpretation in the audio is superb and her voice bears a startling resemblance. 👇🏻

Ericalambbrown Dame Judi is very frank and her language is colorful, which I personally find delightful! The stories are fun and often heartfelt. I‘m so glad I found out about this book! 3mo

I didn't read as much as I'd have liked in 2024 but I'm glad that what I did read was so wonderful. More than half were new-to-me titles, and I also read a boatload of plays and books on Shakespeare - probably inspired by the tagged book, my hands-down favorite of the year. Honorable mentions to the other two pictured, Olga Ravn's fascinating non-linear fever dream and Taylor's walloping gut-punch of a novella. Cheers to a great year, Littens!

This was SO much fun, and it made me want to read or re-read and watch all the plays discussed. One disappointment: I intentionally checked out the audiobook, because I wanted to hear this in Judi Dench‘s voice. I didn‘t realize her part of the conversations was narrated by someone else (my fault—it‘s clearly marked on the cover!). That said, once I got into it, I didn‘t notice so much that it wasn‘t her, and the conversations were a delight. ⤵️

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) There was a lot more literary discussion than I anticipated, which was wonderful. It was fascinating to hear Judi‘s analysis of the characters she played over the years, as well as all her stories about each production. 3mo
willaful Oh bummer. But I'm glad you enjoyed it anyway. 3mo

BarbaraJean @willaful Yeah, it was a disappointment that it wasn't her voice throughout, but honestly, listening to the bonus interview they included at the end, I could understand why they didn't just use the audio files from the interviews as the audiobook. So many little digressions and side comments! @TheBookHippie I hope you enjoy it!! 3mo
willaful @BarbaraJean That reminds me of my favorite audio movie commentary, which is by the director of the musical “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.“ He's having such a great time watching the movie, sometimes he sings along. 😂 3mo

Mehso-so

I can say I listened to the audiobook from start to finish, but I can't say I absorbed all of it. When I was paying attention, Pacino's voice and his recounting of days gone by was on the whole a charming experience, but I found it very easy to drift off to other thoughts in the process. 1/

Robotswithpersonality 2/? There are sadder, darker moments interwoven, but my overall impression is of an older gentleman reminiscing, recounting for a grandchild all those moments they'd want to hear about him experiencing first hand, the milestones. His mother's influence and loss is clearly a thread throughout the narrative, and as with Richards' biography, I'm left with the impression that this individual loves and admires the craft 3mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/3 involved in his profession, that his work has been pivotal, primary, in his life. If you want details, maybe pick up the print version, or make sure you're not distracted or sleepy while listening to audio only. 😅
⚠️mention of mother's suicide attempt, mention of friend experiencing single episode of child abuse/SA, alcoholism
