Reading in the school pick up line. Suffering through this #ARC as quickly as possible. 100% #TeamCindy 🙅🏼‍♀️ This is .... not good.

alisiakae I love that La Croix Curate flavor! 6y
britt_brooke @4thhouseontheleft It‘s my favorite! 💜 6y
emilyhaldi Oof, sounds about as rough as you thought it would be, eh? 6y

vivastory It's a shame that the book is disappointing. But at least the author's name is badass. 😄 6y
britt_brooke @vivastory It‘s a collaboration between two writers and is a made up name, but I do like it. The book has gotten slightly better, but is still pretty bad. 6y
Cinfhen Ugh!!! This book made me so mad 🤮 6y

Mehso-so

This book seems to be quite polarizing based on the reviews I‘ve read. Unfortunately, it wasn‘t a pick for me. While it‘s always fun to read about book within a book 📖 this has a bit of a Lifetime movie vibe...which isn‘t always a bad thing at the right time. This just wasnt the time for me 🙃me.
I read this for #popsugar18 #bookinvolvingaheist ☑️

saresmoore Yes! Lifetime movie! I could never put my finger on what it was I disliked about this book, but I think you nailed it. 6y
AmyG It was no great work of literature. But reminded me more if a Hallmark movie. One of my guilty pleasures. I can see why people didn‘t like it. 6y
Cinfhen Awwwww, I loved this book #rightbookrighttime 6y

Cinfhen @saresmoore Lifetime Movie would be the dreadful 6y
saresmoore @Cinfhen Yikes, I suppose I‘ll be avoiding that one! 6y
Centique I felt very much the same as you - I think I gave it a pick, because maybe on a different day it would have appealed to me more. 6y
LeahBergen I found this one cloying and schmaltzy (and I‘m usually not averse to a bit of schmaltz 😆). @saresmoore @Centique 6y
Centique @LeahBergen great description! I don‘t hear the word schmaltz very often - I need to use it more 😂 6y
Reviewsbylola I had this on my TBR but I don‘t think I‘d like it. 6y
Reviewsbylola Hush your mouth about The Great Alone!!! 😂😂 @Cinfhen 6y
Reviewsbylola Also, you‘ve had a recent binge of so-sos Emily. 😬😬 (edited) 6y
TheLudicReader I didn‘t like this one at all, but I often feel in the minority. 6y
Cinfhen Shmaltzy!!!!! You sound like my Bubbi Sarah!!!!! Thanks for the smile @LeahBergen 6y
emilyhaldi Lol @Cinfhen @Reviewsbylola I‘m #teamcindy when it comes to The Great Alone 😜 6y
emilyhaldi I know!!! @Reviewsbylola I‘m on a really bad book streak 😒 I‘m trying to finish up books for #popsugar18 and unfortunately I keep picking duds... books I don‘t really want to read but they fit the prompts and happen to be in my tbr stack. I need to take more time to curate my challenge books in the future!! 6y
emilyhaldi Yes!! @LeahBergen I couldn‘t have said it better myself 😁 6y
Cinfhen Woohoo!!! Happy Thanksgiving 🦃🧡🌻 6y
LeahBergen @Cinfhen It‘s just the best word! 😆 6y
Megabooks I did enjoy this one. But I think it was a right book right time for me, too. I needed something schmaltzy. That‘s the only think that makes me wary of joining challenges. I‘m such a mood reader. 6y
Cinfhen @Megabooks I found that most books I want to read can work its way into a challenge box if you‘re creative enough 😆that‘s the best part of the challenge & being a mood reader!!!! 6y
Megabooks @Cinfhen Thanks! There were some prompts in #booked2019 that I was a bit worried about, but hopefully I can get a bit creative! I‘m assuming you can skip a prompt if it‘s not right for you? 6y
Cinfhen Absolutely!!! It‘s not about completing 24 prompts @Megabooks it‘s about celebrating reading with friends xx (edited) 6y
britt_brooke It was narrowly a pick for me, but you‘re right about it being Lifetime movie-ish. 😆 6y

⭐️⭐️ Did this really need to be gimmicky? Perhaps, it‘s just me, but I would‘ve connected better with a traditional-style memoir versus one that relies on a catchy subtitle. And while a few of these stories would absolutely be considered “brushes with death,” many hardly seemed as such. It‘s as though she threw in some random instances just for quantity‘s sake. Some were melodramatic to the point of feeling disingenuous.

#unpopularopinion

britt_brooke @Jess7 Sadly, I wasn‘t a fan. I appreciated the essays on her miscarriages, her childhood illness, and her daughter‘s severe allergies, but most of the rest felt pointless or avoidable. It just didn‘t work for me, but I‘m glad I read it. 6y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen Did you feel similarly? 6y
Trashcanman Here I thought this was about Sylvia Plath. 6y
See All 14 Comments
britt_brooke @Trashcanman 😉 It was a ballsy move using such a well-known line for the title. 6y
MarriedtoMrT I felt the same. (edited) 6y
readordierachel I read it more as her confronting the concept of her own (or loved ones') mortality, rather than literal near death experiences. So it worked for me. But I also loved her prose. If I hadn't, I can see it being a little pointless as you say. 6y
britt_brooke @readordierachel If I had gone in with that mindset, it would‘ve been better. I did think her writing was nice, it was just the overall concept and organization that didn‘t appeal. 6y
britt_brooke @MarriedtoMrT Always happy to have an ally! 6y
Cinfhen Excellent review! I DID feel similarly. I thought many of “near death” experiences were overly exaggerated to the point of fake hysteria. It was a bit incredulous, I wasn‘t a fan. I‘m not sure but I might have given the book a soso rating because I thought it was well written. Also she׳s either incredibly lucky or unlucky depending on how you view most of those situations 🙄 6y
Cathythoughts Interesting to hear your take on this one ... I havnt read it yet , I did like her novel The Hand That First Held Mine - a lot. 6y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen Thanks! 💚 That was the frustrating part. You can tell she‘s a talented writer, yet this book doesn‘t make me want to read her again. The premise and organization just seemed weird. Too dramatic. It didn‘t work for me at all. 6y
britt_brooke @Cathythoughts Thanks! I know I‘m in the minority on this one. 6y
Cinfhen Hehehe!!! This #TeamBritt thing feels good 💚💚💚 6y

The Elementals | Michael McDowell

Mehso-so

I just finished this, and I‘m left with a meh feeling. McDowell didn‘t really convince me that there were anything to be scared about. I needed more atmosphere, more creepiness, just more.

What I liked the most were the relationships between the characters, and their interactions. However, most of the characters felt a bit flat to me, which made it hard to really care about them.

I‘m looking forward to discussion it this weekend! #HELLoween

Cinfhen So glad I‘m no longer responsible for the less than perfect Litsy rating 😜and I agree with your review 💯‼️‼️ 6y
Kalalalatja @Cinfhen definitely #teamCindy, for once 😂 6y
Cinfhen Woohoo!!! We may be few but we‘re proud #TeamCindy 😘 6y

Mdargusch I think @emilyhaldi just joined your team. I‘m still thinking about the characters and wishing there was another book about them. 😌 6y
Cinfhen Yup, excellent choice for #booked2018 6y
Cinfhen And I think @peaknit is #teamCindy too @Mdargusch so now we are 4! 😂 6y
emilyhaldi @Mdargusch the characters were my fav part!! They were great... but if I want real creepy suspense I‘m sticking with my fav Shirley Jackson 🖤 @Cinfhen 6y
emilyhaldi Oh! And I totally agree with your review 😊 @Kalalalatja 6y
Kalalalatja @emilyhaldi I really need to read some Shirley Jackson! I can‘t believe I still haven‘t tried her 😳 6y
Cinfhen Same @Kalalalatja BUT the book I‘m reading now is FLAT OUT SHIZZ @emilyhaldi 6y
Kalalalatja @Cinfhen the blurb sounds intense! 😳 6y
Cinfhen It‘s disturbing but at the same time sort of a send up of all things 90s while mocking reality TV and questioning the motives of the Catholic Church 6y
emilyhaldi Yes @Kalalalatja you must!!! 6y

Exit West: A Novel | Mohsin Hamid
post image
Pickpick

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A young couple seeking refuge from their war-ravaged city escapes through a portal into the unknown. This is an odd idea, but Hamid‘s prose marries the real and surreal pieces beautifully. Does this provide all of the details of a true refugee/migrant story? No, but it doesn‘t have to. That‘s the beauty of fiction even when much of it feels real-world relevant. Relax your brain for a moment and let the story take you where it pleases.

britt_brooke Hamid did a phenomenal job narrating the audiobook. Though I switched between formats, I found myself preferring to listen. Mesmerizing. 6y
emilyhaldi I‘m kind of surprised you liked this one!! It didn‘t work for me 😏 but for once I think you‘re #teamcindy 👏🏻👏🏻 @Cinfhen 6y

Cinfhen And beautiful review, 6y
britt_brooke @emilyhaldi I‘m surprised, too. 😆 I‘m usually pretty leery of books with magical realism elements, but I liked this. 6y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen 😂🙌🏻😙😙 Yep, #teamcindy! I loved it! I also just read, and really liked, Commonwealth. We‘re on a roll! 6y
Cinfhen Hahahahaha.....this warms my heart...you might need to read The Elementals because I‘m still #LoneGirlStanding 6y
britt_brooke @Reviewsbylola Have you read this? Seems I remember you saying before that you‘re not a great fan of magical realism. 6y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen 😆 I would, but it looks too scary for me. I‘m such a wimp! 6y
Cinfhen I didn‘t think it was scary but better safe than sorry😘 6y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen I just placed a hold on the ebook, so I‘ll give it a try. 😉 I should get it in the next day or two. 6y
Cinfhen You go girl!!! Can‘t wait to hear your thoughts 🤗🤗🤗 6y
Cinfhen And I‘ll expect to see you at the #80sParty 6y
emilyhaldi I just finised The Elementals and I have to say... #teamcindy 💯❗️ It didn't scare me in the least @britt_brooke if that helps, but I also don't really know what happened 🤔 @Cinfhen 6y
Cinfhen Finally!!!! Thank you @emilyhaldi 🙌🏻💕 6y
britt_brooke @emilyhaldi Ok, that‘s good to know - thanks! I‘ll plan to see you all at the party, haha! @Cinfhen Hope I get the book in time. 🤞🏻 6y
Reviewsbylola I hated this book. HATED. I almost bailed but I carried on since it was so short. 6y
Reviewsbylola For shame @emilyhaldi Nothing scared me. I didn‘t expect The Elementals to scare me. But it was so well written and creepy!! 6y
britt_brooke @Reviewsbylola Dang!! I should‘ve known. 😆😆 6y
britt_brooke @Reviewsbylola I‘m looking forward to The Elementals now, though creepy is not really my thing. We‘ll see how it goes! 🤞🏻 6y
Reviewsbylola It‘s not usually my thing either but I do love old, crumbling Victorian mansions and the author really transports you there. 6y
readordierachel I really loved this one too! 6y
emilyhaldi I wanted it to be CREEPIER!!! 🧟‍♀️🧟‍♂️ @Cinfhen @Reviewsbylola 6y
BarbaraBB One of last year‘s favorites of mine. I‘m happy you liked it too, I wouldn‘t have expected you to 😀 6y
Cinfhen Elementals was ONLY creepy because the PEOPLE were SO creepy!!!! @Reviewsbylola @emilyhaldi @britt_brooke and they were bizarre creepy NOT scary creepy 6y
Reggie What a nice review!! Read the Elementals in the dark, late at night if you can, it‘ll help. 6y
britt_brooke @Reggie Thank you! 💚 6y
britt_brooke @BarbaraBB I was surprised myself! 😙 6y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen Ok good, I‘ll keep that in mind. Fingers crossed it becomes available today. 6y
