Shakespeare: The Man Who Pays the Rent | Judi Dench, Brendan O'Hea
post image
Pickpick

This was magnificent! A series of interviews of Judi Dench on her long career as a Shakespearean actress. She just adores Shakespeare and had an absolutely phenomenal career. Her enthusiasm comes out along with her insight in to playing these roles. So many major performances and she embraced them and the texts so deeply. I can't recommend this highly enough to anyone who feels that Shakespeare love. Especially our #Shakespearereadalong veterans.

Graywacke @jewright me too 🙁 2mo
mollyrotondo This was a great group! Miss it! Thank you for this find! 2mo
merelybookish Thanks for this! My daughter has just fallen in love with Shakespeare at university and it's making me want to read him again. 2mo
Graywacke @mollyrotondo hope you enjoy find and enjoy the book. Maybe we need a revival 2mo
Graywacke @merelybookish you‘re daughter is awesome. I‘m seriously contemplating a kind of focused Shakespeare revisit in my personal reading. Not sure how to go about it. There are some plays I haven‘t read yet. But I also want to revisit a whole lot them. (Especially after hearing Judi Dench wax away in reverence) 2mo

My new audiobook. Dench is magnificent. She‘s about 90 now. And while we must suffer through another reader reading her words (a good reader), her answers have been sparkling through my 1st hour - on Lady Macbeth and on Stratford-upon-Avon. Old #shakespearereadalong peeps - you will want to check this out.

Bookwomble Barbara Flynn is another national treasure actor, though perhaps an emerald to Dame Judy's diamond 😊 3mo
Graywacke @Bookwomble that‘s cool. I don‘t know anything about her. She does a good job here, and her voice is a good fit. 3mo

Reading this, hearing Judi Dench‘s voice in my head, makes me want to reread every Shakespeare play, and watch the RSC productions online. I wish I‘d had it nearby as we read them in the #shakespearereadalong days!

Graywacke I‘m just an hour in. So amazed already. Where‘s my Macbeth? Or was that a library copy. I agree with @TheBookHippie ‘s ♥️s 3mo
Lcsmcat @Graywacke She does make you want to read with the Riverside Shakespeare by your side, doesn‘t she? Glad you‘re enjoying it. 3mo

I thoroughly enjoyed the #shakespearereadalong of yore, even though life got in the way and I drifted away a few plays in. I‘m taking my kids to see their first Shakespeare this year (in Stratford-upon-Avon, at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, I‘m so excited, haven‘t been for years!) and feel a reignited passion! I‘ve decided to set myself a year of Shakespeare, following the old format of an act or two a week. Starting here- let‘s see how it goes!

"Still more Shakespearian is the scene of the pearl. Cleopatra, enthroned in state at the banqueting-table, lifts one hand to drop the jewel into her goblet, and in her gesture and her smile are summed up all the cruel grace of the 'false soul of Egypt'". Love it when words collide, in this case #WhartonBuddyRead & #ShakespeareReadAlong ? @Graywacke

batsy @Graywacke Same! 11mo
Lcsmcat That line jumped out at me too. But I think my favorite section was when she not-so-subtly pans George Elliott. Wharton is the queen of snark. 11mo
batsy @Lcsmcat Oh no, I must have missed that...zoned out when I read it, maybe 🙈 I did enjoy her snark towards George Sand! 11mo
Lcsmcat @batsy I shouldn‘t post before I‘ve had my coffee. I meant Sand. 11mo
batsy @Lcsmcat Haha, no that's a relief! I was worried I had missed out on reading the book while reading the book 😁 11mo

Shakespeare's Sonnets & Poems | William Shakespeare

Pickpick

I‘ve been dipping in and out of these sonnets in leisure, (and in mood), sometimes listening to Patrick Stewart‘s recitals, other times reading the text then with the help of a reading guide. In such a concise structure with fixed pattern verses, so much emotional depth can be found, it just amazes me. I don‘t understand them all or enjoyed each of them, but the rich language, and wit of some of them are a pleasure to read and return to in future.

erzascarletbookgasm #shakespearereadalong Thanks for leading @GingerAntics sorry I‘ve been a terrible group member. 2y
Graywacke Great post, and congrats on finishing 2y

Hey #shakespearereadalong gang, what‘s a good, readable, biography of Edward III? I‘m particularly interested in his personal life, not his wars, and nothing sleep-inducingly academic. Thanks in advance. @GingerAntics @merelybookish @Graywacke

GingerAntics Hmmm… the only book I can honestly say I‘ve read that had Edward III in it that wasn‘t Shakes was Ed West. If you like your history a bit snarky, you‘ll love him, but his book isn‘t entirely about him. It‘s more about the social and political world of medieval England, but it centres itself around Edward III‘s reign in a sense. It‘s not strictly chronological, more thematic, so some people didn‘t like it for that reason, too. 2y
Lcsmcat @GingerAntics Thanks. I may add that to my list. I decided to start with Mark Ormrod‘s biography, which seems to be about the man rather than the warrior, if you know what I mean. . I‘m only one chapter in, but it‘s very readable so far. 2y
Graywacke I have no idea. But I‘m really curious. 2y
GingerAntics @Lcsmcat I look forward to your thoughts on Ormrod‘s book. I‘ve never been sure if I want to read it or not. (edited) 2y
