I got a lot from my previous read of #Genji, so I thought I would reread for the #Reading1001 yearlong read this year by listening to the Washburn translation. It‘s interesting how I‘ve forgotten so many details, but then hear sections that immediately seem so familiar.

I downloaded this a few nights ago when I needed a new ebook to read a few pages before bed. Set in Albania during a time of transition after communism, it was strangely compelling with its mix of storytelling. There‘s a contemporary story of Mark and his girlfriend in the changing city combined with his remembrances of stories and strange dreams. I found it interesting, but in the end I didn‘t quite understand it.

My first audiobook of 2025 was a #1001books listen. I liked this one better than the previous book I listened to by this author, but her style is not apparently for me. I felt like this book had somewhat disconnected storylines, left too many things unanswered, and ended rather abruptly. I guess that makes it true to life, but I‘m not sure what I am supposed to take away from it.

This was a quicker listen than I expected. I started it a few days ago, but when I got back to it today I listened straight through to the end. I‘m not much of a reader of espionage novels, but I appreciated the tangle of events and explanations this one explored. I‘ll definitely be interested in picking up another of Le Carré‘s novels.

Took a long time to get into this book, then it was finally good. I couldn‘t do a DNF. And it‘s another #1001 book checked off the list!

This is a tough book for me to review, and I‘ve actually waited a few days thinking about it. It has some really interesting aspects in the way it‘s told by the son of a couple who were convicted and executed for conspiring to steal secrets for Russia. Yet, it was also complicated to follow as it jumped back and forth in time. Additionally, I wanted more of the sister‘s story.

This book made me chuckle several times. It‘s absurd and ridiculous and I love all the deadpan humor.
It‘s been a long time but I finally checked another #1001 from my list.

Opening with NYE in 1979 London, Liz and her closest friends from university, Alix and Esther now entering their 50s, weather the changes of the early eighties. From a divorce after 25 years of a "modern" marriage to disillusion with the socialist left, to leaving London and the UK altogether.

Written without chapters, the narrative flows from one character to the next, incorporating dozens of narrators to provide a full picture of the times.

There has not been enough hammock time this summer, but today I finally got a bit with Gandalf for company. I found this book an interesting examination of character and commentary on aging alone, but it was a rather slow and melancholy read for me. I was glad that it ended with a bit of hopefulness.
