Unfortunately, I found this one to be a bit boring. I liked the general idea behind the story, it just couldn't keep my attention. The story was meaningful, though. I liked how it ended even if the middle was a little hard for me to get through.

I think this is a great book to talk about saving memories. Growing up is difficult because at such a young age you can't always remember a lot from growing up so this fun story can help you with that.

In this story Freda the main character comes to a dilemma after blueberry picking with her grandma. She realizes that she can save things by memories. The author does a great job talking about how memories can be saved and this is a great book for upper elementary school students.

I was expecting a cookbook, and this has recipes in it, but only a few. Mostly it tries to persuade the reader to store and preserve lots of food (and other emergency supplies) and explains ways of doing so. It is simultaneously very specific to 2009 and still topical today. (The few times she mentions the possible coming flu pandemic… well.) I am somewhat persuaded. I appreciate the focus on not just providing for oneself, but one‘s community.

I took a food preservation class at my local library and got excited. Also, they are apparently having a contest among the county branches to have more books checked out. I was happy to help out 😁 #libraryhaul

Tamra How fun!! I recommend McClellan‘s books too - the tagged book and Preserving by the Pint. In both it‘s about small batch preserving. 😊 (edited) 1y
SamAnne I really love Food in Jars as well. And Tart and Sweet! Has the best spicy bread and butter pickle recipe in it- a style of cuke pickle I don‘t normally enjoy. Happy canning! 1y
Clare-Dragonfly @Tamra @SamAnne Thanks for the recommendations! My library has Food in Jars so I‘ve put it on hold! 😄 1y

A very straightforward and approachable introduction to maintaining an archive. This is a book that I will continue to turn to as a reference.

“Yes, archival work is challenging, but it is very rewarding. My hope is that this book will help provide you with the foundation for a successful career as a professional archivist.”

“Dearstyne stated, ‘Strong, well-led [archival] programs feature adequate support, sufficient (and rising) funding, clear direction, appropriate staffing, and secure facilities.‘ He also noted that successful programs have seven characteristics:
- clear sense of purpose and mission
- evolution and change
- dynamic, balanced expansion
- high visibility
- customer focus
- peer recognition
- professional engagement”

I liked this middle grade book, BUT I wasn‘t prepared for the anxious feeling I had while reading it. The safety of the snow leopard is in jeopardy for most of the book, and it was a lot to take on. Now, I‘m off to read some adult book with, hopefully, a snarky narrator and no animal endangerment, something a little more relaxing…😬
