New Kid | Jerry Craft

The 1st graphic novel to win the Newbery, this story of a city kid starting at a fancy new school, is great. Tackling topics of bullying, feeling like not fitting in, struggles in making new friends, while handling being ‘different‘ in subtle ways, this middle grade is handling tough situations with sensitivity. The art is good, but it is Jordan‘s ‘sketchbook‘ pencil drawings within the book, that I fell in love with. #52bookclub23 #newberywinner

BarbaraBB Is the Newbery a prize for graphic novels? I haven‘t checked yet… 2y
KarenUK It‘s for children‘s books…. This was the first time a graphic novel won it…. There‘s a ton of choices… it‘s been awarded since the 1920s! @BarbaraBB 2y
BarbaraBB Thanks! I didn‘t know! 😘 2y

Poetry is probably my least read genre, and maybe if I had read some books like this when I was younger I would have explored it more. Fun, fantastical, and a quick read!

The Hundred Dresses | Eleanor Estes

Amazing early reader book with magnificent illustrations. In 80 pages Estes covers exclusion, teasing, guilt, talent, and more. Two girls (and more) tease a classmate because she wears the same dress to school daily. One of them is quite poor herself and is embarrassed and feels terrible, but she is afraid her popular friend will turn on her. #newberywinner

Finally picked up this #newberywinner in audio this weekend, and between the gym, dog walks, and yard work, finished it already. I found the story to be fine, if a little slow at first, but the characters are delightful, and I was happy to spend the time with them. Excellent audio performances. Also a much more hopeful book than my previous read of Kelly‘s, Land of Forgotten Girls. #kidlit #middlegrade

My favorite books may be childhood favorites that stand-up in adulthood. This one definitely makes the list, as charming and fun as ever. #NewberyWinner
