Sincerely, Harriet | Sarah Winifred Searle

What an unusual, nuanced graphic novel. There‘s nothing juvenile or simple about this story. No easy morals or cliches. It‘s a story about a teenager named Harriet whose family has just moved, and how she spends the days while her parents are working multiple jobs. The circumstances are revealed slowly and even at the end there is a lot that isn‘t spelled out. I would recommend this for adults as well as teens. Very thought provoking.

I elect this required reading. WNP Barbellion was the pseudonym of Bruce Frederick Cummings, an avid English naturalist and diarist. Sadly, Cummings did not have very long to live (we now know he had multiple sclerosis). It‘s his written ruminations on death, on scientific ambitions cut short, and a great love for Literature, Nature and his wife/child that make this one of the greatest journals published. He died in 1919 at the age of 30.

It‘s not every day you read a fictional story about the family left behind when someone is swept away in a tornado. I thought this had a lot of potential, but it was often too bogged down with unnecessary detail. Ultimately, I felt a stronger bond with the town itself than with the characters.

Sassy mug with my second HOT cup of coffee and a completed book. I love impromptu snow days.

A bit slow-paced but still a marvelously wonderful teenage romance love story. Not your typical fluff romance, it delves into rich, difficult topics and struggles that are faced even today. Delightful read!

Extremely glad for @DGRachel for recommending it to me for #NewYearWhoDis. Looking forward to some of the others!

This is whom I want my girls to emulate. Buck that system if you see something wrong, even if it is an Islamaphobic teacher who thinks he can berate you. Your mom will get expelled with you. Set in #Qatar but this sweet love story could be set anywhere.

Why I loved this teen romance even though I normally despise romance: believable characters. Zayneb takes action in the face of bullshit & injustice. Adam is quiet & considerate. Islamic faith is satisfyingly woven into the narrative in an #ownvoices way. I wept at a stranger‘s kindness, then at the description of MS symptoms, but didn‘t feel like the author toyed with my emotions. I guess “believable” is the key word here. I cared. #Canadian

I was not thrilled that my YA bookclub chose this title, since I am not a fan of romance. I‘d read Ali‘s Saints and Misfits previously and it was okay, but I have little patience these days for books that I am not passionate about. I admit I was pre-hating this book. I decided to just read enough of it to be able to join in the discussion. Then, I got sucked into the story. Wow, was I ever wrong about this book!

Hooked_on_books I love when I go into a book with a bad attitude and it changes my mind. That‘s the best! 3y
Lindy @Hooked_on_books It doesn‘t happen often that I go in with a bad attitude, but, yes, how wonderful it is to be wrong sometimes. Our zoom discussion of this book was last night and everyone said good things about it. 👍 3y
