I really enjoyed this book which is written by a surgeon. I loved reading about the personal experiences and perspectives of this surgeon which were bursting with detail, pure honesty and emotion. I look forward to reading another book by Dr. Ruggieri.

@CSeydel I started this on audio today and can already tell that it will affect me deeply. As a former hospice nurse, I‘m very aware of unnecessary and often more painful medical interventions that hurt rather than help. There is such a thing as a “good” death, one that allows quality of life in those last days/months rather than quantity. #ALSpine25 @monalyisha

CSeydel Oh wow I didn‘t know you were a hospice nurse! You will no doubt already have thought a lot about the issues he brings up, which I had not. Still, he is an excellent writer, and the book is quite powerful. 2w
CBee @CSeydel so far I‘m pretty blown away, and his writing is excellent. Great narrator on the audio too, which helps! I won‘t finish it quickly but will listen to it throughout the month 😊 2w
DogMomIrene I didn‘t know you were a hospice nurse. My husband was a hospice nurse for a couple of years back in the States. Definitely his favorite nursing job because he did learn, and shared with me, that a good death does exist. We‘ve got a small pile of books on death. Will need to check that this one is there. 2w

CBee @DogMomIrene it was my favorite too, if I‘m being honest. Strange to say but it was so rewarding and I felt honored to be with my patients in their last days ♥️ 2w
DogMomIrene @CBee That‘s exactly how Matthew felt. It‘s not a nursing position for everyone, but when a person fits, you know. 2w
CBee @DogMomIrene is he still a nurse? I left years ago but love hearing about other‘s experiences! 2w
DogMomIrene @CBee He‘s retired. He and our pup Bernie just got certified as a therapy dog team. They had their first visit at the hospital with a patient recovering from burns. And he‘s looking at visiting the palliative care home here, which is like a hospice house in the States. So he‘s retired, but finding ways to make a difference for patients. 2w
CBee @DogMomIrene wow, that‘s so lovely ♥️♥️ 2w

Essential reading for those open to learning real statistics and hearing personal experiences, as opposed to hiding behind blind faith, inflammatory partisanship, or unfounded personal opinions. This country is being forced to conform to the narrow beliefs of a minority who refuse to consider the consequences of their baseless preferences. Read the source, instead of some twisted media interpretation (because of course they have twisted it).

lil1inblue I'm struck by how the last 2 sentences of your review could apply to *so* many issues in the United States right now. And I totally agree. Stacked. 1mo
TieDyeDude @Amiable Thanks for sharing. This book came out post-Kavanaugh, but before Roe was overturned. She does contemplate what the overturn of Roe could mean for abortion rights, and nailed it, unfortunately. 1mo
TieDyeDude @lil1inblue Too true. I added the last line because, since much of her research was published in scientific articles before the book came out, she talks about people taking certain lines out of context to support their own bias. Pathetic. 1mo

I‘m posting one book a day from my massive collection. No description, no reason for why I want to read it (some I‘ve had so long I don‘t even remember why!). Feel free to join in!

I carried this book with me to WA as my backup book (I read one on the flight there). I‘m a hospice volunteer and I love hearing others‘ stories! The author shares how she became a hospice nurse, some life stories of her patients, and some of their more ‘other worldly‘ ones too. Yes, these moments happen all the time! When finished, I donated it to a little free library that was in a lovely garden in SeaTac.
