Mouth to Mouth: A Novel | Antoine Wilson
post image

“The timing was good, the chemistry was there, this book treated me well. That‘s my choice.” And thus today‘s judge in the #ToB23 chose Mouth to Mouth over The Passenger. Just like us.
Its success in this round in the #LitsyToB33 is mainly due to the fact that many people didn‘t read or bailed on The Passenger. It was voted for by @Megabooks, @jlhammar @Cariashley, @Readerann, @Larkken and @Ruthiella but it wasn‘t enough. Mouth to Mouth it is!

Suet624 Phew. I‘m glad. 1y
jlhammar Well, as the Kid might say, Adios, Alice! Sad to see The Passenger knocked-out, but not surprised. When I was anticipating this match, I was struck by how masculine both books were. That is not really a selling point for me so I felt for the judge and appreciated her honesty (even though I‘d have advanced McCarthy). I‘m loving the pet mascots! Great addition ToB! 1y
batsy I'm shocked. The Passenger is miles ahead of Mouth to Mouth (in my very humble opinion, lol). I should have voted for ours 😆 1y

sarahbarnes I‘ll admit I didn‘t read the McCarthy, but I did quite enjoy Mouth to Mouth so happy to see it moving forward! 1y
Ruthiella A different judge would have given a different response! You can never predict the TOB! 🐓 I don‘t think I‘d have ever picked up either book, we‘re it not for this competition, and I‘m glad to have read them. (edited) 1y
RebelReader I‘m happy with this result! I loved Mouth to Mouth! 1y
Jas16 It is the choice I would have made (I was one of those who bailed on the Passenger) but I was surprised by this outcome. 1y
BarbaraBB @batsy You should have 😄😄 1y
BarbaraBB I am kind of glad too with this outcome. I loved Mouth when I read it and the concept of it but to be honest it didn‘t linger as long as I expected it to. However, I couldn‘t do The Passenger- may try again! 1y
BarbaraBB @jlhammar You‘re right about the masculinity of this book. I appreciate the approach of the judge ! 1y
Cinfhen I totally agree @batsy @Ruthiella @Jas16 I didn‘t make it through the Passenger but I felt like Mouth to Mouth was just an ok book. I had read it prior to the tournament announcement and I wasn‘t very impressed. Fun to see how things will play out in both tournaments. 1y
Deblovestoread I didn‘t read The Passenger and after reading the judge‘s comments I am pretty sure it is not a book for me. Mouth to Mouth was an ok read. 1y
Larkken @jlhammar masculine = 💯 agree! Maybe this is why, although I enjoyed Mouth to Mouth, and thought it was v clever &etc, I didn‘t fully connect with it and only gave it 3-ish stars. I enjoyed the language more in the passenger, so that‘s why I voted for it - though I found my brain pinging away from the page altogether too often, as I am wont to do with McCarthy…😅 1y
Chelsea.Poole @jlhammar oh yeah, Mouth to Mouth is “masculine” as well, now that you mention it! You‘re much more eloquent than I am with my “manly” descriptor for Passenger lol. I didn‘t hate the McCarthy, but I felt like I didn‘t get as much from it as I was supposed to. I‘d probably have it enjoyed it if I had a professor educating me along the way. 1y
Hooked_on_books I‘m not at all surprised this is the way we went and I‘m glad the official tob agrees with us. I found moments of the Passenger absorbing, but as a book I wasn‘t a fan. So, I‘m glad to see MtM advance. 1y
Readerann Full disclosure: I didn‘t read either book, but I did read reviews, etc. My vote was based on the one I suspected I would dislike the least. 😆 1y
Hooked_on_books I finished reading the judgment and commentary and would agree with the commentators that the judge didn‘t seem to love either book. I wonder if we‘re going to see a lot of that with our own feelings about the shortlist being lackluster this year. 1y
BkClubCare @Readerann - it counts! 😁 1y
BkClubCare @BarbaraBB - both, definitely, very masculine-presenting 1y
BkClubCare Somehow, I think, I was surprised by this. Probably the weight and prestige of the Cormac-McCarthyness, and length/weight. The Passenger had a pie mention 👏 but I had a more fun reading experience with MtM. I probably liked The Passenger more, but it felt grudgingly so. Weird. And I am super annoyed that the plane crash never gets explained. 1y
merelybookish I voted for Mouth to Mouth. It had limited appeal but I cannot even pretend I ever was going to or ever will read The Passenger. 1y
kwmg40 I liked Mouth and am happy it is moving on in both tournaments. I started Passenger and like it so far, but the comments about the lack of resolution make me less motivated to continue. 1y
BarbaraBB @Hooked_on_books I noticed that too, that the judge didn‘t seem to love either. It is very well possible we‘ll see that again this TOB I think 1y
