This was a nice blend of the dark and emotional time of WWII on a German, Jewish child and the hilarious input of the two fantastical beings who travel with him to England. I appreciate the acknowledgement of the antisemitism found in the western nations. The spy training was interesting. The ending was incredibly rushed. I hope this is the beginning installation of a series.

For as long as I put this off (I have to be in the right mindset to read about WWII) I thoroughly enjoyed it! I would put it with my favorite books of the year. Max‘s adventure is just this side of Lemony Snicket over-the-top ridiculous, without trivializing the overall conflict. I‘ll be watching for the sequel!

January‘s book club selection. I‘m glad this story was written as it‘s a great piece of history to know about. I recently learned about the Kindertransport from a children‘s non-fiction picture book I came across at work, Stars of the Night, and found this to be a nice historical fiction tie-in. The first half was kinda slow and boring but the story did pick up. ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Cortg @TheBookHippie Thanks for sharing this article! I had passed over this story recently and I‘m glad you brought it to my attention for me to read! I‘ll share it with my book club gals when we meet 😊 12mo

I feel bad about this because I‘ve enjoyed other books by this author, but my mind kept wandering and I couldn‘t stay focused on the story. I think in this instance, the audiobook format may not have been the best choice.

I feel like this book could easily be a movie with Meryl Streep as Tante Truss!

Absolutely loved this one

PROMPT: GOOD-HEARTED WOMAN by Waylon Jennings 🎶

I'm here to help you were the words the children longed to hear and words they trusted belonged to Tante Truus who is an actual woman named Truus Wijsmuller-Meijer.

Focuses on saving Jewish children by this woman who is said to have saved 10,000 children.

I knew nothing about the kindertransport or Truus Wijsmuller-Meijer, who helped save over 10,000 mostly Jewish children by getting them out of Germany and Austria and into England during WWII. I liked the book but it was quite slow. Overall still a pick though.
