I really wanted to get through this, but by hour eight of audio I just couldn't...too many people to keep track of, and too much corruption and greed to process at this particular moment in my life. Thanks for the rec, @amiable! It was worth a try, with some interesting nuggets in it.

Amiable Oh, I‘m sorry you didn‘t like it! I didn‘t do it on audiobook—I‘m not sure if I could have kept track of things in that format, either. 2y

Vonk is an anthropology student interested in the life of migrants / refugees traveling through Mexico. Early on he meets Axel, who‘s got a complicated and unique story. They form a bond and traverse the dangers of cartels, immigration officers, and police together. This is a gripping true story with multiple caveats.

Christine Tempting review! Curious about the caveats… 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Christine So … Volk states right up front that most people in the caravans lie to protect themselves. The caveat is that you‘ll never know for sure that anyone‘s story is completely truthful. Even some parts of Volk‘s. But it‘s more about protection from harm than trying to “enhance” the narrative. Take a peak at my full review if you want to know more. 3y
Christine Super interesting - will read your full review for sure! 3y

Very well done. A graphic biography - interviews distilled into a narrative about a fictionalized character to protect identities of those involved. In the story a literature student in her first year of university in South Korea 1983 is invited to what she thinks is a sanctioned school activity, but turns out to be a banned book club meeting. The things she reads and people she become friends with lead her to become a revolutionary.👇🏼

IndoorDame This was already on my library holds list, but it seemed especially fitting this week. #Nonfiction2022 #ImACriminal @Riveted_Reader_Melissa 3y

This was a truly fascinating read about poisons and crimes committed with them. I knew about most of these poisons but not the crimes associated with them. I loved the science mixed with true crime. It was informative, engaging, and a thrilling read.

You‘ve probably read the story of OxyContin, but have you heard of Subsys? This is the shocking story of the rise of John Kapoor and Insys, a small pharmaceutical company that rocked the world of chronic pain and fentanyl in the early 2010s. They took Perdue‘s playbook into hyperdrive and payed doctors to prescribe and had an in-house department that committed insurance fraud. A must-read if you enjoyed Empire of Pain or Bad Blood! 5⭐️
