A Swazi Boy | Malachy Purcell
post image

Malachy Purcell was born and raised in Swaziland, now #Eswatini, and details his early life in this memoir. His father was part of the British colonial government, so he grew up wealthy and privileged. His early years are interesting, but once he gets to the teen years, it‘s mostly boozing and riding along on his privilege. 😝 I give it a so-so. (This one isn‘t in the database, so the tag is another of his.)

Librarybelle At least parts of this were interesting - I think I would struggle with the privilege aspect as well 2y

A feel good coming of age novel set in #Eswatini (former Swaziland). Two teenage girls with completely different backgrounds are brought together on boarding school. There is a lot of racism and prejudices but once they get to know each other, they have much more in common than they thought.

Librarybelle Oh! Jane Austen inspired! 2y

BarbaraBB @Librarybelle I was wrong… I meant Jane Eyre 🤦🏻‍♀️ 2y
Librarybelle Haha…no worries! That still interest me, but a very different tone indeed! 2y

Here‘s my updated fiction tbr list for #readingafrica2022. Since I last posted it I have added books for #EquitorialGuinea and #Eswatini (previously #Swaziland). I‘ve posted the country for each book and possible sections in a bookstore to find them. I posted nonfiction books separately. @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

Mehso-so

#Swaziland #readingaroundtheworld #Eswatini Not my usual read. This is Christian fiction about a western photojournalist attempting to come to grips with reporting on the AIDS epidemic in Swaziland while being overwhelmed with how little he can help. The stories of the children left behind by AIDS deaths is well told. The religious conversion piece less so. I did learn about eSwatini, a small absolute diarchy with an est. 26% of adults HIV+
