Great children‘s book about colonial life & times. The copy I read had a different cover than what is shown on this site/app.

This is full of really good information. It was a cool idea to look at the rest of the continent during the pivotal year of 1776. The British colonies turned United States were only really mentioned to point out that they made up just 4% of the continent, but they‘re all we ever hear about. Unfortunately for this book, it is dry as hell. This book is a prime example of why 99% of students hate history.

GingerAntics Saunt has managed to take relatively interesting and thought provoking information and go on for so long about it, the reader no longer cares and just wants the book to be over. #ClaudioSaunt #WestOfTheRevolution #AmericanHistory #IndigenousHistory #ColonialHistory #History 3y
RamsFan1963 That's a shame because it sounds like a really interesting topic to read about. 3y
GingerAntics @RamsFan1963 it really is. This is just overly academic and not very approachable. I wish someone would use the idea to write a popular history or something. 3y

This history of Jamestown was ultimately an interesting if uneven book. There were some parts in the middle that dragged on and made me fall asleep in less than 15 minutes, but the story picked up near the end. Most Jamestown lore focuses on Capt. John Smith and Pocahontas, but there‘s a lot more to know. I like this time in history when religious and cultural norms were in flux. And any book that features James I earns points from me! 😉👑

Apparently, in the 18th century, Russians would make fur clothing out of just about anything, including DOMESTICATED CATS!!!

It‘s interesting to read about how very clueless the colonists were as to what lay to the West. Some folks claimed in the 1600s that‘s they stood on top of the Appalachian Mountains and was the sails of ships on the Pacific Ocean in the distance, and this was the prevailing thought throughout the revolutionary period. No lie.

This makes me think of “I can see Russia from my back yard.” 🤦🏼‍♀️ This is certainly a whole new spin on that.

Freespirit I could not believe that comment😕 4y
GingerAntics @Freespirit I think there was a collective face palm, including John McCain, when she said that. 4y
CSeydel Well, not really, since it was Tina Fey who said it. Sarah Palin said “you can see Russia from an island here in Alaska.” 4y

GingerAntics @CSeydel because adding the island was so much better. It seemed every time she opened her mouth, we were all face palming. 4y
CSeydel Okay, I wasn‘t trying to start a fight. It‘s true that you can see Russia from parts of Alaska. I‘m not really sure why that‘s a facepalm, compared with some other things she said. 4y
GingerAntics @CSeydel it‘s a face palm because seeing another country isn‘t foreign relations experience. Instead of being honest that she didn‘t have any, but she brought other things to the table, she said you could see Russia from Alaska. 🤦🏼‍♀️ 4y
