I picked this audiobook up in a sale years ago after reading the obituary the author wrote for herself and learning it was her only book, published after she died. Unfortunately, the memorial note at the beginning was the best part for me. The novel itself is a hot mess, with unlikable, one-dimensional characters and a plot that is all over the place. Ugh.

⭐️⭐️

My #BlackJack21 book for #Booked2021 though. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Sharpeipup What a fun cover! 3y

Just had breakfast and made a Plan for today- wade through the pile of toys and clothes and try to get the house back in order whilst finishing the above audiobook for #booked2021 #blackjack21. I‘m about half way through and I‘m not sure it was the best introduction to Haig as I‘m not enjoying it that much but care enough about the MC to finish it.

Cinfhen Sounds like a good plan/ too bad that book isn‘t working out for you. 3y
Dodi Hi @Magpiegem, I've never used audiobooks as I'm not sure they'd work for me. What platform do you use? Do you listen to books while doing something else that doesn't required mental engagement? Thanks 3y
Magpiegem @Dodi I use audible and also two different library apps (I live in a place where I have access to two different library systems) Libby and BorrowBox. So basically I listen to everything on my phone. It‘s great for when I‘m out walking the dog or the baby to sleep. Or when I‘m at home doing chores or the rare occasions I‘m in the car alone and can listen to what I chose. For me it‘s all about the audio narrator, that‘s makes it breaks it xx 3y
Dodi Ah thank you! Yes, I guess the narrator makes the difference, I'll try perhaps oh my walk and see how it goes xx 3y

My final #Booked2021 prompt (#Blackjack21) was also my November #doublespin pick (yay for two birds, one stone!). I enjoyed this one, but do be warned -- it's a book about suicide. I actually put this down after a really fast start as a cautionary measure because of some stuff I was going through -- but it wasn't really necessary. There is hope in here!!

The story of Cyril avery from 1945 when his 16 yr old mother is hauled out of her pew by a priest + publicly humiliated as a whore in mass, through to hid final days had me at times laughing out loud to blubbing + wiping my eyes. A wonderful book that highlights the hypocrisy of religion, the definition of love,+ the fragility of humanity. I cld talk abt it for days 5*.

Open Heart | Elie Wiesel
Pickpick

This was short and beautiful: a significant Holocaust survivor's reflection on having had open-heart surgery at age 82 and the questions, fears, memories, and values it raised. He looks at whether he has done enough, his relationship with his father and son, his relationship with his own body, and desire for a future that might not come.

Mehso-so

This is the story of how De Beers controlled the diamond industry and exploited the people of the region. The author also intersperses his experience with child loss in the narrative. It was a hard read. 224 pages for #NovelNovember; my #BookSpin book for #BookSpinBingo and #Booked2021 #Blackjack21 @Andrew65 @TheAromaofBooks @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft

Andrew65 Doing well 👏👏👏 3y
Cinfhen This has been on my TBR / it sounds super interesting!! Too bad it was only a so-so 3y
TheAromaofBooks Great progress!! 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage We‘ve had lots of “club” and “heart” choices for this prompt. I *think* this might be the first “diamond!” 3y

The concept is fascinating, and when the men's thoughts and opinions are allowed into the narrative you can see the potential for a thought provoking read. But Brottman is, quite frankly, insufferable. She gets frustrated when the men don't share her own views on whatever they're reading, she complains that they're not connecting to the work, but then says they're wrong whenever they start drawing connections. Just when it seems that she's 👇

TheKidUpstairs ... turning things around and opening up, Lolita happens. She doesn't judge the men for their crimes, but regularly judges them in other ways, especially for not being what she perceived them to be at all times. And she has a sense of entitled outrage with the COs that is rather annoying. 3y
TheKidUpstairs But at least I get to check off a prompt for #Booked2021 - #Blackjack21 Club in Title @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen 3y

A humourous witty take of finding out your husband is having an affair.
The introduction to this edition is written by Ephron - in which she sets the backstory of the book and how it is "thinly veiled"
Read for #blackjack21 for #booked2021

EvieBee I love what Virago did with this design! 3y
Smarkies @EvieBee me too! It captures the different aspects of the book so well. 3y
ReadingEnvy The audio is read by Meryl Streep! 3y
