An absolute chunkster presenting complicated ideas and obscure academia that demands your complete attention? Right up my alley. I loved Babel.

I can see why this book has been so controversial -- I am conflicted about a lot of things, but I found the level of research and writing incredible. I got the point. I didn't expect to feel this sad after reading ... but it left my heart wrenched. So anyway 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

This is an emotional, poignant love story of both romantic love and love between a mother and daughter. It moved me in the end - I teared up multiple times - but it also felt really slow and overly wordy for the majority of the book.

It feels great to finally check this off my TBR! This was my oldest unread #BOTM purchase. Now I only have to catch up on my 2023 picks! 😊

The Survivors | Jane Harper

Pickpick

My only complaint about Jane Harper novels is that reading them seriously impacts the rest of my life -- it's just me and this atmospheric Australian whodunnit wonderfulness until I'm finished. Although I will say that this is the first one I've done in print, and I missed the Aussie audio narrator ...

mcctrish Well maybe I need to get my second JH on audio 🤔 2y
AvidReader25 I feel the same. I just started Exiles. 2y
scribo I really liked the symbolism at the end, when the protagonist's literally lends him a hand to step out of the water holding him back from moving on with his life. 8mo

The Blind Assassin: A Novel | Margaret Atwood

5 ⭐️s! I know this isn‘t news to anyone… but Margaret Atwood‘s writing is exquisite. I loved the story within a story, the witty and reflective passages about aging, the incisive examination of traditional gender roles, and the way she captured humans‘ yearning to be remembered. Even though it‘s long, I still felt sad to turn the final page in Iris Chase‘s story - like saying a wistful goodbye to a great friend. #BOTM #botmbacklist #botmbacklog

LeslieO I loved this book! I accidentally left it in a coffee shop when I was halfway thru, I went back immediately but it was gone. So I went to the right to the bookstore and bought another copy so I could finish it! 2y
ICantImReading @LeslieO oh noooo haha! I‘m sorry that happened to you! I hope whoever picked it up liked it, too 😆 2y
MemoirsForMe Great review! 🙌🏻 I need to read this. 2y
ICantImReading @UwannaPublishme thank you so much! It‘s a chunkster, so you have to be in the right mood, but it‘s very worth it! 🥰 2y

Ariadne | Jennifer Saint

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ariadne‘s retelling is a scathing examination of the price women pay for men‘s sins. I wasn‘t familiar with this myth and loved experiencing it through a female-centric perspective. I was entranced by the beginning with the Minotaur storyline, and my jaw dropped a few times during the exhilarating and tragic ending, but the middle lagged a little for me. #BOTM #botmbacklist #botmbacklog

I enjoyed the idea for this book. I also liked the snark in some of the dialogue. What bothered me was the poor writing skills. The use of metaphors was over the top, to the point that I found it distracting.
Murder mystery in an upper class book club. Uppity women with secrets. Kids with issues. And everyone drinks everyday.
It was okay. Quick read. Nothing really memorable. #BOTMbacklist. ⭐⭐⭐

The Other Black Girl | Zakiya Dalila Harris

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Smart and original, this social horror novel really made me think. It‘s a bit slow at first, but takes an unexpected and sinister turn. I thought the commentary on workplace politics, microaggressions, white fragility, the weight of racial trauma, and white supremacy was so clever and creative. #botm #botmbacklist #botmbacklog

Winter Counts: A Novel | David Heska Wanbli Weiden

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Both entertaining and eye-opening to the ways the federal government continues to fail Native Americans. It‘s violent and action-packed, a story steeped in corruption and broken promises, but equally a heartfelt celebration of culture, identity, and community. #botmbacklist #botmbacklog #botm

Bringing Down the Duke | Evie Dunmore

⭐️⭐️⭐️

I didn‘t think this type of historical romance would be my thing, but watching Bridgerton warmed me up to the time period and I thought I would give it a try! Serious, pretentious, possessive, cold alpha male leads don‘t really do it for me, though. I appreciated the women‘s suffrage component, although for being marketed as a feminist story, Annabelle was much more passionate about the Duke than the cause. #BOTM #botmbacklist #botmbacklog

swishandflick If you give historical romance another go, I'd recommend trying something by Tessa Dare instead! ❤️ 3y
ICantImReading @swishandflick ooh thank you!! Which one of hers is your favorite? I‘ll check it out! 🥰 3y
swishandflick The Duchess Deal definitely comes to mind! Or Romancing the Duke 3y
ICantImReading @swishandflick thank you!! I‘ll give this genre another try someday 😊 3y

The Animators: A Novel | Kayla Rae Whitaker
post image
Pickpick

The Animators is the portrait of a friendship and art partnership, starting when Mel and Sharon meet in college. Maybe it‘s the bright cover, but I was expecting this to be somewhat lighthearted and it isn‘t at all. It‘s heavy and deep with these two deeply flawed friends coming across as very real. It‘s terrific. #botmbacklist

rachelm I loved this book. One of my favorites 3y
