pickThis was a soft pick for me. I really liked how well it captured the camaraderie of a theater department, I see why kids relate to these characters & their problems. I did think the sense of urgency I remember about life at that age didn‘t really come through, I struggled to understand what about this pushes it onto banned book lists year after year. I assume it‘s about teenage sexuality, but mentions of that (both gay & straight) are so tame⬇️

LibrarianRyan The banning is overkill. It keeps getting banned as “gayness“ is normalized. It doesn't have to be explained or excused, like life it just is. I have found that even some parents who don't care if their kids read “gay“ books, just that this was “too open and normalized“ about the subject. Yes I am hitting my head against a wall as I write that. 2y
