Returning to the #2017manbookerprizelonglist for my #currentread.
Starting this tonight.
#2017manbookerprizelonglist
Finished this morning. This is actually a toss up between a pick and so-so, but I'm giving it a pick because of Barry's explorations of identity and relationships. Those explorations make it worth reading. ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 #2017manbookerprizelonglist
You know it's a good #bookmail day when your Book Depository order arrives and includes a signed copy of one of the books you ordered. Pretty cool! 📚#2017manbookerprizelonglist #signedcopy
Sebastian Barry is one of my favorite authors, but I've been struggling with this one. I'm on page 85, and I'm only now starting to see a glimpse of what I love about his writing. The sentence I've quoted starts a scene that shows the dichotomy of beauty/horror that he usually does so well, but not so much in this book. It's as if he's trying too hard to use vernacular, and it has a jarring effect. But I do see a glimpse, so I'll keep reading.
